I need some intel.
Janke 1st MRB replied to Smithers 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
Ya, you'll want to get the universal parts first if you're building a computer in "instalments." It's best to start with the case, the DVD drive, and the Hard Drive, as those tend to maintain a generally steady price and compatibility. Then you'll want to get the power supply, but know what you want out of the rest of your computer. If you get a shitty power supply, then all of a sudden come into some money and want a dual-SLI setup, you're fucked. It's best to buy with a lot of room to spare when it comes to PSUs. The last things you want to buy are the Motherboard, CPU, RAM, and Video Card. It's best to buy these all at once, but if the MoBo comes with an integrated (but always shitty) graphics card, the extra graphics card can wait for a bit. Still, the MoBo, CPU, and RAM should all be bought at once, and it's best to do the video card too, as integrated ones are shit, and some MoBos don't come with integrated. -
McKenzie's Audio Woes...
Janke 1st MRB replied to McKenzie 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
The reason they "bypass" the default drivers is because a USB headset comes with it's own drivers, and embedded in the headset is it's own sound card. Therefore, it doesn't use the default drivers of your computer. Now, if you're using Realtek audio drivers, which most default audio drivers are, you can download a more up-to-date version of the drivers from here. Until I updated those drivers, I had issues using the Realtek sound card on my PC because it would only seem to give audio to 2 or 3 applications at once, IE Windows and Vent, but not DoD:S. Updating helped a lot, it got rid of that issue. However, I do have a USB headset, and it is awesome. -
Anyone ever wonder what adult teeth look like? Well, here's 4 that I recently had pulled at the dentist's: And here's me with a mouth full of gauze: Orthodontist said I needed 4 teeth out to make room in my mouth, and I get the railway tracks put on Wednesday.

I need some intel.
Janke 1st MRB replied to Smithers 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
If you've got a single-core right now, then there's no point in just upgrading the processor, with a single core 1.8Ghz, the highest potential you have is a 2Ghz dual-core, and that's a generous estimation. With that set up, it's best to just buy a new computer, upgrading the processor won't do anywhere near as much for performance as getting a new rig. -
I'm using one we probably got for free in the '90s, the mouse illustrated on it has 3 buttons. I used to not use a mousepad, but then my table got warped and was fucking up my aim. I don't need some amazing mousepad that costs $60 (coughcoughSteelseriescough) as long as my mouse is good enough to track on the shitty surface, which it is. You can even tell this is a ball-mouse pad because it's not smooth, it's designed to catch the ball on the bottom of the mouse. I don't see the need to spend a shitton on (what I see as) a useless commodity. My mouse was $70, I don't want to spend ANOTHER $70 on some piece of plastic to put my mouse on.

I get this when I crash and a "ghost" of me is still on the server. I just get someone to kick the ghost so I can reconnect.

Suggestion for Antivirus Software
Janke 1st MRB replied to Benson's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
At the moment, AVG has gotten kinda shitty. I had a malicious virus on my laptop once, one of those fake AV programs, and Malware Bytes anti-Malware (MBAM) kicked its ass. MBAM and Spybot Search and Destroy are an awesome combination. -
Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, Poppy Day, or Veteran's Day, is a day that the countries of the world pay homage to and show respect for those who have fought and died for the defence of their country and freedom. It was started 1919, on the anniversary of the end of WWI, to honour those who fought and died in what was then the most violent and deadly war in all mankind, hence it's nickname, "The Great War." From that war, the symbol of the poppy arose, a universal sign of respect worn in November until, but not after, November 11th, for those who have fought and died for their country. During WWI, Canadian LtCol. John McCrae, a medic for the Canadian Forces, wrote the poem In Flanders Fields about what he observed in the fields in Flanders, Belgium during one of the bloodiest battles in WWI. Before the war, few poppies grew in that field, however during the bloody battle the soil became rich in nutrients from the rubble of war and the blood of the fallen, and poppies thrived there. After the war, however, the poppies began to fade again. During the battle, LtCol. McCrae wrote the poem about what he was seeing. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. -LtCol. John McCrae. Nov 30, 1872 - Jan 18. 1918. Since WWII, Remembrance Day has been adapted from showing respect for just the Veterans of the Great War, to showing respect for those who have died in wars and peacekeeping conflicts around the world. Many people think it's just for WWII, which is disappointing. People still to this day are fighting for our country and dying, and those heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country deserve respect as well. The few, the brave, the proud who have served and died for our country deserve the utmost respect, and this day is set aside so that the citizens of the country can show their respect for those brave few. Wars are bloody, wars claim lives, and if we forget those who have died for us, we forget why we are free today. We forget why our country was established. We forget why we are here. For this reason, we remember the wars, the millions of lives lost worldwide in armed conflicts, and the brave men and women still serving in armed operations today. Lest we forget. *Salute*

Use Photoshop CS5? You probably need RAM
Janke 1st MRB replied to Dillon 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
XP isn't, but there are plenty of Vista 64-bits out there. If your computer came with 4GB or higher, it has 64, if it came with less than, it has 32 and as such supports a maximum of 4GB total (including VRAM from the graphics card and physical RAM). -

Janke 1st MRB replied to Dillon 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
I could feed African children, or I could buy more shit. As well, I think Win7 takes up 16-20GB of space, so an 8GB SSD is too small. Personally, I've contemplated the SSD idea, but I think a single 1TB HDD would do me fine, I can deal with a few extra seconds of boot time. That, and I'm lazy, and a lot of my games save shit in the My Documents folder, and I don't know if there are issues with moving that folder to a different drive, and I don't want to troubleshoot issues if there are any. I suppose being lazy is a terrible excuse, and it would be great to get a 60GB SSD and install Ubuntu and Win7 on it. Then again, this is pretty much all useless ramble as I'm not likely to build this computer any time soon. Though I do have the money, I have better things to spend it on. -

It does sound sweet, but that price tag of $1700, in other words the remainder of my summer wages, is what's preventing me from buying it. -

$1700 for an i7 930 rig with a GTX460, 12GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, a Blu-Ray RW and I can't re-use anything, I need this one to stay intact (It's a family computer, I'd be wasting my money on a personal rig, and my bedroom can't have Ethernet wired into it, so I'd be on WiFi) And I realize 12GB is a retardedly large amount of RAM, I mostly want the bragging rights over a friend who has a comparable i7 rig. Not a very good reason, and a waste of money, but Goddamn if I think about futureproofing, 12GB of ram seems like it would last an age and a half. -

Same, but the issue becomes gaming on wifi and my parents nagging me about wasting $1700 on a new i7 rig. They're less likely to yell at me for spending $400 on upgrades. -

Janke 1st MRB replied to Dillon 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
The issue with getting a newer card is some of them require 2 6-pin plugs from the PSU. I know with my card, my PSU didn't even have 1 6-pin (fucking prebuilts) and only had 1 molex (the GPU came with a 6-pin to 2 molex converter). I had to split my 1 molex into 2 and then connect the converter from my card into it. Looking at the GTX460 I'd need a new PSU of at least 730 watts (For extra comfort, and I've got a 360 now, so...), so you've gotta make sure your PSU supports your card. That, and I'd be buying a new HDD along with it, so I want the extra cushion of power for another HDD, and potentially a Blu-Ray drive in the future. -

HOW THE HELL? It's an entry level card from 2003, how in the hell is it still going strong? You sure you've got the right card? -

Personally I've been looking at getting the 768MB GTX460, it's only $169 (newegg.ca) and my 9600GT is getting aged. -
Better ping, less lag, I like the change.

It depends on the clock rating of your Pentium D on whether or not the Athlon would be a better choice. Most I've seen are 3.0Ghz and up for the Pentium D, which would give you an advantage over the Athlon, especially if it is single core. After some quick research, I've found that the Athlon 64 3500+ is a single-core CPU from 2004, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_A...microprocessors As such I'd advise you stay with your current Pentium D, which is dual-core, likely faster, also newer than the AMD.

Upgrade or buy a new one?
Janke 1st MRB replied to Cayen's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
Personally, I think it would be a better idea to just get a standard 1TB 7200RPM HDD than add on another $160 SSD, I'd wait until Solid State comes down in price before buying one, right now I don't think the money's worth the speed, your usual HDD is fast enough. Either way, I endorse Ford's build. -
Upgrade or buy a new one?
Janke 1st MRB replied to Cayen's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
I agree with this man, though watch out. Sometimes the cheapest may be shitty and unreliable, read reviews before buying and make sure to look at ratings. I generally don't touch anything with more than 10% of reviews being 1 star (or one egg, in the case of Newegg). -
My father told me something great about the theory of gun control, "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away." This is why I want to own a gun, and why I'm pissed that everyone in Canada is so scared of just the goddamn word "gun". I have a whole rant ready on "Gun Control versus Gun Ban," but I don't feel like posting a wall of text. Maybe I should make a video...

That video was the first ICP thing I'd ever heard of, it was so hilarious and stupid, it's like watching a Seth MacFarlane show.

The teachers at my school are actually intelligent and the kids who would be stupid enough to sign it couldn't be bothered to pick up the pen to do it.
