Dying Computer, Need New Computer
Janke 1st MRB replied to Legend's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
For keyboard, the 2 companies I can recommend are Razer and Logitech. I use a Logitech G15 and have for nearly 2 years, and I love it. That being said, I may not get another Logitech keyboard, because I hardly ever use the screen on it. I don't know exactly what Razer to recommend, haven't looked into it, but I know they make some quality shit. The Logitech I use runs $100-$130, but you could get a good Razer for $60-$80. For mice, I'd recommend Microsoft and Razer. Some people don't like the Microsoft Sidewinder mice series, but 3 of my last 4 mice have been MS and I've loved all of them, they've all been awesome. I'm using the MS Sidewinder X5 right now, but if I were to get a new mouse, I'd again be looking at Razer. A friend of mine has the Razer Imperator, and loves it. These mice will run around $50-$80, but they're pretty awesome. For headsets I'd have to recommend what I bought recently, the Logitech G930. I replaced my SteelSeries 5Hv2 with it and I couldn't be happier to be rid of that terrible SteelSeries. This headset has a batter that lasts hours, a wireless range from my basement to my bedroom on the second floor of my house, 3 programmable buttons, a switch to activate the 7.1 channel surround sound or to run it in stereo (and in stereo music sounds AMAZING), volume controls, and a voice changer in the software. As well, you can use it while it's charging, and the base has a fairly long cable for charging it with. I paid, after taxes, $130 for this headset, and I would have paid up to $150. I've seen them run anywhere from $120-$180, but I wouldn't recommend paying over $150 for it. The only qualm I have with it is the microphone is a shitty quality, they actually capped it at what Windows calls "tape recorder quality" for wireless bandwidth reasons, but the quality sounds ok to me, just don't do any hardcore recording on it. It could definitely be better, but it's passable. As well, I didn't get an SSD myself last upgrade, and I don't think the difference is going to be worth the still colossal cost for it ($200 for 160GB, ridiculous, no matter how fast it is, I still think that's too expensive). -

I beg to differ that people can't get by with only 1TB of storage, I've not even half filled my 1TB Deckstar, which I bought because I had nearly filled a 500GB, though when I upgraded I still had 75GB left on the drive. Unless you're torrenting movies/music galore, or buying every single game available on Steam, you won't need an excessive amount of space, and 2TB is definitely excessive. If you can cut price, I'd recommend only getting a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black, it will probably shave nearly $100 off the cost, and most people likely won't need much higher than 1 TB for average use for at least another 4 years. -

I'd be inclined to recommend this motherboard instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813130571 Better rated, and it has the newer tech on board (USB3, Sata6GB). As well, that motherboard you linked, Dillon, is an LGA1156 socket, the CPU you linked is an LGA1155 socket. Personally, I'd have gone with an LGA1366 i7 & board, as I linked, but your CPU is decently powerful for what he needs. As to the thing about SSDs and Overclocking, I wouldn't recommend either unless you really know what you're doing, especially the overclocking. I know a lot of shit likes to install a ton of crap into the My Documents folder, which can add up rather quick then the OS is 20GB itself and the SSD only supports 40, and is another $200 on the pricetag. I didn't when upgrading mine because I 1: didn't have the space and 2: didn't want to be bothered to fuck around with re-directing install shit to the right drive, or figuring out of My Documents can easily be moved drives without issues. I have no problems using a 7200RPM 1TB HDD as my primary and only drive, it works perfectly fine for gaming, as far as I know the main place an SSD helps is in startup times and application launching, which are both, IMO, not worth spending an extra $200 on speeding up. Once a game/level/whatever is loaded into RAM, the HDD does nothing. Overclocking is some iffy shit, you fuck it up and there goes your $225 processor. I don't even think of touching it on this rig, and haven't bothered on my old one. I'd advise against it strongly. I'd also be inclined to say if you're not going for a triple-monitor setup, that http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?...N82E16824236103 would be a better monitor, it's got a larger screen size despite a smaller resolution, it's cheaper, and I don't think the difference between TFT and IPS is going to be that huge, but for the IPS option I'm going to put http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?...E16824236119CVF out there. Same price, higher contrast ratio. -

I've only ever had 3 peripheral graphics cards; a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9200SE (2003-2008), a Zotac NVidia GeForce 9600GT (2008-2010), and an EVGA NVidia GeForce GTX460SE (late 2010-now). When I purchased both of the latter, I'd heard nothing good about ATI's drivers for the cards they offered, and to be honest hadn't been keeping up much with ATI, other than that AMD had decided to re-name them after themselves. I still haven't really been keeping up with ATI, and to be honest, I'm a brand loyalist on 2 accounts; Intel and NVidia. Not even considering getting an AMD CPU, and I'd have to do a fair bit or research and hear almost nothing but good things about an ATI card to get it in the future, but I'm planing on stretching my 460 to last 2 years, just as I did my 9600. I know, though, that if I go ATI, that Sapphire is often considered the best choice, just as EVGA is often considered the best choice for NVidia. -
'Nam and Iraq are 2 key points that show we are not a US puppet regime, like most dictatorships in the Middle East, and often times (except Harper, who is very American in his views) Canadians tend to vote against an American seeming candidate, hence why Ignatieff lost so badly, he's been out of the country for 30 years, most of that being in America, and we don't want an American leading our country, especially the Quebecois.

Hadn't thought about portrait mode because it usually looks odd, but that does look pretty awesome. -

It depends, I know HD may not be a big pull for some people, personally it's why I bought my monitor 3 years ago, but you can't really get True HD even with 3 monitors if they don't have the right resolution, at least 1080 pixels high and 1920 pixels wide. Those HPs are only 900 pixels high. Also, didn't know that ATI had that, pretty awesome. Also, wouldn't it be possible to get a display port converter, and don't some video cards come with them? Also, the resolution of his desktop would be 4320x900 with the HPs, I'm pretty sure they do horizontal before vertical. With the Asus ones it would be 5760x1080. -

Yes, a wireless card, but I'd recommend using a wired connection, I actually ran a cable through my ducts to my basement to get wired internet down here. -

Does ATI support tri-monitor enhancement now? Last I'd heard it was a NVidia thing. Also, won't he need 2 graphics cards to get the appropriate number of ports for monitors. I know that, even though I have 2 DVI and a mini HDMI port on my card, it only supports 2 displays. As well, I'd be inclined to recommend http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824236051 for the monitors. Yes, the deal ends today, but it's only $10 more than that HP without the savings and has more screen real estate and a higher resolution. As well, when you look at the reviews and feedback, as I often do when purchasing something I haven ever used, it has a very high number of reviews and lots of feedback, and almost all of it is positive feedback. Of the 815 pieces of feedback they received, 617 of those reviews rated it 5-egg. Yes, the HP has received all 5-stars, but I'm always a little wary myself of high ratings on products with less than 50 people providing feedback, and the HP has 3 ratings only. Yes, ratings aren't everything, but when something gets a large amount of positive feedback, it tends to be because it's a reliable, good product. -
We need him to re-record more than just that! I can imagine it now, replacing the death screams with Jones saying "Oh dear." It would be amazing.

First off, don't get another Alienware, for what they cost you could build 2 equivalents. Are you looking to buy a pre-built computer or do you feel you have the knowledge and skills required to build your own? -

I don't understand how Bev Oda, the orchestrator of the KAIROS funding scandal got re-elected to her seat. That response of mine mainly comes from the fact that I've been hearing a lot of ignorance and stereotypes about Harper's plans recently all over the net, and they've been setting my teeth on edge a fair bit. I don't support everything they stand for and everything they plan to do, but I support them more than anyone else this election, and the extremely dumb and uneducated things people have been saying about what he's going to do (basically, they're expecting him to suddenly turn us into Bush-lead America overnight, which will NEVER happen) have my teeth on edge.

Harper is not going to magically snap his fingers and destroy healthcare, and it's rather stupid to assume that, quite frankly. People think that, because he has a majority he'll emulate the exact stereotype of the American Republican, but Canadian Conservatives ARE NOT REPUBLICAN. Harper isn't stupid, he knows that if he fucks up and pisses people off he'll get demolished in the fashion of Brian Mulroney come 2015. At least this means something will finally get done, what that something is we'll have to see. Also, Cayen, just no. Considering how "open-minded" and "accepting" Liberals usually claim to be, they all seem to be extremely closed-minded and ignorantly stereotyping Harper after this election, and I find that to be disgraceful. It seems most left-leaning people I talk to are under the assumption that Harper will fill ever single stereotype of the GOP in the States, but HE WON'T, I can almost guarantee that. Medicare has been around for decades, he can't and won't just snap his fingers and make it "disappear," and I find the people who are spouting stereotypes like he'll ruin education and destroy medicare and repeal gay marriage and abortion rights and that the Tories support UBB to be extremely ignorant on the platform and commitments of the Conservative party, and are just assuming the absolute worst based off an irrelevant, baseless stereotype. It's truly sad and disgraceful that these people, who often get rather angry as soon as you say one thing that may be taken negatively about gay marriage, abortion, women, the stereotypes thereof, or racial stereotypes, can go and baselessly bash and stereotype not just an entire political party, the governing party, but 40% of the country's population without a second thought. These are supposed to be the supposed "accepting" people in the populace, and right now they seem to be on the same ignorant and closed-minded level of those they always tried to set themselves apart from, and shame on them. If they had a problem with something that is factually in the platform, I would have no problem, but they are basing all their complaints off of pure stereotypes, and that is pathetic.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavote...yelection/#/131 According to CBC and Elections Canada, it's going to be a Conservative Majority and an NDP official opposition. The Bloc Quebecois, the separatist part in Quebec, holds only 2 of 308 seats, they need at least 11 to be considered an official party. Separatism is dead, and it looks like Harper got that majority he so coveted. Also, the Green are actually winning May's seat, and I predict they'll hold it. Discuss, good/bad that they have a majority? Would a minority with the NDP opposition be better? Personally, I think maybe. I want shit to get done, and 3 terms of minority won't do that, but I'm worried how honest they'll be now that they have a majority, will they live up to their promises? Gilles Duceppe of the Bloc Quebecois just resigned, and in his resignation kept pushing separatism. Figures, but frankly, I say good riddance.

R. Wells [No Sound]
Janke 1st MRB replied to Wells 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
Wait a minute, is your monitor plugged in via an HDMI cable, or do you know if your video card supports audio-through-DVI, for when DVI is converted to HDMI? If so, it could be something in the drivers for your video card, though I'm not sure what. I know that both video and audio can be simultaneously transferred over HDMI, and I know my old video card supported audio-through-DVI, because it had a DVI to HDMI converter, which would allow the audio signal to be transferred over the HDMI cable plugged into the adapter. I don't know where the setting in the video card drivers would be, but that could be a place to check. -
Purchasing a Router - Could Use Opinions
Janke 1st MRB posted a question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
Alright, I've got at my disposal currently for wireless networking an archaic 802.11b Netgear from 8 years ago, and a 5-6 year old 802.11g D-Link WBR-1310. I'm looking to upgrade to something no older than a year and no slower than Wireless N 300mbps. The requirements for this router are 802.11b/g/n compatibility up to 300mbps, at least 4 10/100 ports, and preferably 4 10/100/1000 ports, that it costs less than $100 before taxes, that it works for gaming, specifically Games for Windows LIVE, which is apparently a finicky bitch, and that it not die after 6 months like the D-Link I have did. So far I've got in mind the Cisco Valet M10-CA, which has everything but gigabit, and I'm not sure about GFWL, but apparently it hates old routers, and this one is most certainly not an old router, the Cisco Valet M20-CA which is another $20 but has 4 gigabit ports, the Linksys by Cisco E1000-CA which is a lot like the Valet M10, but $20 cheaper, and the Linksys by Cisco E2000-CA, much like the Valet M-20, but $10 cheaper. I'm looking for some more opinions on this, so that I don't get a piece of shit that I end up pissed off about in a few months. What kind of routers would you guys recommend? I'd prefer Canadian sites and Canadian prices, what may be under $100 in the States could be as high as $120 in Canada. -
Surprised nobody dug this one up earlier, especially Ford.

I've still never gotten an answer, even from myself, as to why this game is so addicting. I fucking love MC, and I still don't know why.

I need to go back to my save in 3, I've got an island of 700 and I've been in power from 1950-1992, and I've never illegitimately rigged an election, I'm planning on going until the game's limit of Y2K soon on that save.

This game is the stupidest way to have fun, it's like an Adult Swim TV show in game form in terms of its comedy.

This goddamn "blizzard" made the school boards up here shit their pants and cancel school. Unfortunately, it would have only been a half-hour day anyways because all we were doing was getting our marks. Still, omnly about 10cm have fallen, I've gone to school in worse, but all the weatherpeople freaking out made the school board paranoid.
