New Laptop opinions
Lafy BAR replied to Gearhart 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
If you want something with a video card you're probably looking at something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834246327 Otherwise, I'd look for at least something with a Core i3 or better, so something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834246308 If you need to hit that $350 number you'll need to either go with something refurbished or something with a somewhat crappy CPU -

Everyone is welcome.... follow the rules.....

I doubt that a programmable computer would work very well... the redstone is a little buggy, especially when the construction gets very large, but who knows. Give it a shot. We have 2 servers up and running, one was our main server but is now effectively dead. We mostly use it for prototyping. Lafy.sytescope.com The 2nd is the one that everyone plays on now (me, gio, stone, sarsons, barry, ultra, click, mckenzie, others....) Lafy.sytescope.com:25566 The rules are pretty simple. Don't steal from other people's chests Don't break/mine/set fire to/blow up other people's things Don't build ugly shit too close to other people's houses (STONE!) Not a rule, but out of courtesy, stay out of other people's houses/mines without asking permission.

Closed - photo shop
Lafy BAR replied to Bickford's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
The Gimp is free, and sucks..... For Photo Shop, you can download a trial here http://www.adobe.com/downloads/, then you can buy it after that expires..... or waive a magic wand at it.... -
Here's a reupload of it, in a zip so that windows can open it. http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/3505...ntrilo-zip.html

that was detailed.... no i haven't done that.... I didn't want to wait in line for the elevator down the CN Tower, so I took the fire escape. (it took nearly half an hour to walk down the one hundred and fifty flights of stairs)

Never done it. I fell off a roof while shingling. (I landed on the porch roof luckily)

I dunno..... Maybe I'm crazy, but I have to say that's art..... at least, modern art.... and any art that isn't modern is just bad art.

Maybe someone whose university gets them access to download studies can get a copy of this study and the referenced "me" association study and we can find out. Here's the link, somebody on a university network get us a copy! http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/psp/102/4/815/

Resolved - K. Gardiner - Needs a new PC
Lafy BAR replied to Gardiner 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
Are you likely to fiddle around with overclocking things at all? Also, anything savable? Monitor (resolution?), case, power, keyboard/mouse, etc... -
Interesting NY Times article about a scientific study on sexual orientation. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/29/opinion/...-youre-gay.html "Using this methodology we identified a subgroup of participants who, despite self-identifying as highly straight, indicated some level of same-sex attraction (that is, they associated “me” with gay-related words and pictures faster than they associated “me” with straight-related words and pictures). Over 20 percent of self-described highly straight individuals showed this discrepancy."

Resolved - MAC Address removed.
Lafy BAR replied to Marsden 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
It does sound like someone tried to hack the thing and broke it. It shouldn't be possible for the MAC to show as 000000000000 unless the nic is pooched or has been tampered with.. You might try setting the alternate MAC address to get it working, something like 0017FA010101 should work. If not you might be stuck picking one of those xbox wireless adapters. -
Resolved - MAC Address removed.
Lafy BAR replied to Marsden 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
Does it say "not listed" or "not set"? Not set is the default setting on an xbox. To find the actual mac address go down to where it says "not set" and hit A the real mac address should be at the bottom of the screen. Have you rebooted the modem since connecting the xbox? Most cable modems lock to the first mac address they find on boot up, if you've disconnected a PC and connected an xbox the modem needs a reboot. If you want to be switching the ethernet cable between a pc and an xbox without a router then you can set them both to have the same mac address, but if they're ever connected to the same network at the same time it'll prevent one or both machines from being able to communicate at all. -
Thinking of building a new rig
Lafy BAR replied to Korda's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
I'm thinking that by "next spring" you meant 2013, not 2012.... in which case waiting a year to buy a pc so that you can get more up to date parts seems silly. the argument that new stuff will come out and current stuff will get cheaper is always true, might as well argue that you should wait 5 years because by then quantum computers might be economically viable and these classical computers will be way cheaper..... -
Thinking of building a new rig
Lafy BAR replied to Korda's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
Here's some random bits that add up to under $500.... lets see what Dillon yells at me for putting in the list...... List of bits I assumed you could save your case, and from the look of it that's an mATX case, so no ATX boards for you. I also assumed you might need that IDE adapter to pick up your existing drives.... it looks like that machine would have had IDE (PATA) drives, not SATA. -
Unlike the others, i knew right away this was a happy thread. I've been trying to get laid off for a year. Frankly, I'd have taken getting fired. Gave up on that 2 weeks ago and told them to find a replacement so I can quit. You're a lucky bastard.

Also, while you wait keep saving up. Very little from that computer will be worth saving.
