I don't know much about Nonis but I doubt he'll be the permanent GM. If you want a summary of his most notable moves like I do, here is an article published by sportsnet: NONIS' MOST NOTABLE MOVES Draft History Nonis added some quality players to the Canucks franchise but had his fair share of misses during his four drafts with the club. 2004: This was Nonis' first draft and by far his most successful. He added an infusion of high-quality prospects to a Canucks team in need of young talent. Notable picks: First round: Cory Schneider -- Schneider has developed into the team's No. 1 goalie. Second round: Alexander Edler -- Rock-solid defenceman that has stabilized the back end. Fifth round: Mike Brown -- Nonis will see the high-effort grinder in his new job. Ninth round: Jannik Hansen -- Any time you can get an NHLer in the 9th round, it's a win. 2005: Nonis got some good value here but unfortunately the Canucks franchise suffered some terrible luck with their top pick in his second draft. Notable picks: First round: Luc Bourdon -- Bourdon was a highly-touted defenceman before tragically dying in a car crash in 2008. Second round: Mason Raymond -- Raymond has not quite lived up to the hype but is still a capable roster player with the Canucks. 2006: Nonis had a rough draft class where Vancouver's only successful pick didn't make an impact until he left the Canucks. Notable picks: First round: Michael Grabner -- Grabner had a breakout year for the Isles in 2010-2011, after the club claimed him off waivers from the Florida Pantiers. 2007: This was a disastrous draft year for Nonis; not one player Vancouver selected ever suited up in an NHL game. Notable picks: First round -- Patrick White Second round -- Taylor Ellington Trades/Signings When it comes to trades, the deal to land Luongo was clearly the most impactful move Nonis has made in his GM career. He was able to acquire an all-star calibre goalie in exchange for Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan Allen and Alex Auld. A monumental move that helped establish the Canucks as a premiere franchise for years to come. Outside of that, Nonis never really made another marquee trade or signing. He didn't make any real splashes and tried to supplement his core with veteran players without sacrificing any of the team's top-level prospects. Most of his most moves were short-term trade deadline acquisitions or players to help strengthen the bottom of the roster. Some of the players he acquired included: Taylor Pyatt, Bryan Smolinski, Mika Noronen, Keith Carney, and Eric Weinrich. His most successful free agent signings were: Willie Mitchell, D -- Reliable veteran helped stabilize a shaky Canucks defence. Anson Carter, F -- Excelled (33 goals) playing between the Sedin brothers. Never was the same once he left. Alex Burrows, F -- Burrows has developed into a top-six forward for the Canucks. Did not hit his stride until he reached the 50-point plateau in 2008-09 but Nonis was already gone by then. Nonis was fired in 2008 after the team failed to make the playoffs in two of his three seasons with the club. For those expecting the second coming of Brian Burke in Toronto, you may be surprised. Nonis has some similar philosophies, but as was proven in Vancouver, the two have very different approaches in building a hockey team. It seems to me that he's not the greatest GM a club would want. I just don't know who else is available right now... Wayne Gretzky? jk

Ya but why so suddenly? It was widely known that Burke stopped contacting the Canucks about Luongo because of the asking price before December. Burke was at the Marlies game the night before, there was no sign that he was going to be fired at all. I think he said something to piss of the board or insulted someone higher up. I don't know, but I really don't think the man lost his job over Luongo.

I finally got internet back so now I can make that follow up post I promised. I live in the heart of downtown Toronto and I've been listening to the radio, watching the news, and reading some blogs all day. The one thing that I found in common with all these Toronto media sources is that none of them really know why Brian Burke got fired. All of these sources are just speculating as to what caused the abrupt termination of the 13th General Manager in Maple Leafs history. That being said, what all of them don't have in common is the same theory. I've pretty much heard every possible scenario that caused Burke to get fired from all sources of Toronto media today and to be honest, they could all be right. After watching the press conference, held by Maple Leafs management, announcing the firing of Brian Burke and hiring of Dave Nonis, I came up with my own conclusion. There were certain things that stood out to me from that press conference: 1. Leafs management and Nonis said they are not re-building, they will be building up what they already have; 2. Dave Nonis said he is "more patient" when asked what the difference between him and Burke is; 3. When asked if Luongo was the cause of the firing, Tom Anselami (President of MLSE) said no; 4. Leafs management compared the relationship between GMs and owners, specifically saying that they are different then relantionships between GMs and players. After absorbing as much information as I could as to why Burkie got axed, I believe it was his personality and the way he behaved as the GM that got him fired. For the past 5 years when you think of the Maple Leafs, the first person most people think of is Brian Burke. He was a outgoing, intimidating, impulsive, and he talked a big talk. If you're winning, then you can look past these personality traits but if you're not, then those become a problem. In the corporate world, when someone gets fired abruptly it means they said something to piss off the boss. When you're a character like Brian Burke and you're not getting any results after 4 years then you're someone who becomes irritating. When Burke took over as GM he said he wanted his team to have pugnacity, truculence, testosterone and belligerence, and unfortunately after 4 years he never accomplished his goals. In his defense, he did inherit a terrible team and made them somewhat decent in 4 years, but there were still some things he missed out on because of his stubbornness, for example, his unwillingness to front load contracts to sign star players. I love the guy, he's passionate about hockey and he made some amazing trades for the Maple Leafs (with the exception of the Kessel trade). I'll miss him, but at the same time I'm glad we're getting some new blood in here. As for Dave Nonis. This is his second time taking over for Burke after a team fired him (he did it in Vancouver). I know very little about him and I don't feel he's a very good GM. Even though they didn't slap the title on him, I think he's only an interim GM until they can find someone more qualified. Here's hoping something right will come out of today's events.

I'm at work right now so I haven't had the opportunity to find out more about why he was fired now. When I first found out, my first reaction was WTF? Why now?!?!?! I don't think he was fired because of Luongo, but I'm not sure. I'll post more when I get home.

Agreed, random pick up games happen ALOT. Go on twitter and see how many pros ask people if they want to get a pickup game going or if they know of any happening.
-
So basically you're assuming that doesn't happen anymore which no one can prove because if it does happen, it would be unannounced, no media around, just kids playing hockey with stars. @ Arsenault - You're french canadian, need I say more?

How do you not have the triple crown winner getting this? Miguel Cabrera should win it.

What is Leafs Nation? Leafs Nation is the fact that no matter what arena you play in, there will always be just as many Leafs fans as there are home team fans. We even have fans in space! That is Chris Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut who on 19 December 2012, launched in the Soyuz TMA-07M flight for a long duration stay on board the International Space Station. Sometimes it sucks being a Leafs fan. But it's those magical moments that make it all worth it. The great thing about a new season is you start fresh with high hopes. And take with you the positives from last season. Welcome back, you beautiful devil you. GAME ON!

Thanks, we try our best. I use photoshop to do the layout even though illustrator would be easier. Apply for the media staff then. -

Guys, stay calm, the Canucks will go another year without any of Lord Stanley's cups under their belt. Why would you get rid of them? you got your money back + interest on the games that weren't played.

THE LOCKOUT IS OVER! After 113 days and a 16-hour negotiation marathon that wrapped up at 5am on Sunday morning, a tentative deal on a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement has been reached between the National Hockey League and NHL Players' Association. The agreement features the following elements: - The players' share of hockey-related revenue will drop from 57 percent to a 50-50 split for all 10 years. - The league coming off their demand for a $60 million cap in Year 2, meeting the NHLPA's request to have it at $64.3 million - which was the upper limit from last year's cap. The salary floor in Year 2 will be $44 million. - The upper limit on the salary cap in the first year is $60 million, but teams can spend up to $70.2 million (all pro-rated). The cap floor will be $44 million. - The 10-year deal also has an opt-out clause that kicks in after eight years. - Each team will be allowed two amnesty buyouts that can be used to terminate contracts after this season and next season. The buyouts will count against the players' overall share in revenues, but not the team's salary cap. - The salary variance on contracts from year to year cannot vary more than 35 per cent and the final year cannot vary more than 50 per cent of the highest year. - A player contract term limit for free agents will be seven years and eight years for a team signing its own player. - The draft lottery selection process will change with all 14 teams fully eligible for the first overall pick. The weighting system for each team may remain, but four-spot move restriction will be eliminated. - Supplemental discipline for players in on-ice incidents will go through NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan first, followed by an appeal process that would go through Bettman. For suspensions of six or more games, a neutral third party will decide if necessary. - Revenue sharing among teams will spread to $200 million. Additionally, an NHLPA-initiated growth fund of $60 million is included. - Teams can only walk away from a player in salary arbitration if the award is at least $3.5 million. - The NHL had hoped to change opening of free agency to July 10, but the players stood firm and it remains July 1 in the new agreement. But with a later ending to the season, free agency for this summer will start at a later date.

Canada didn't show up at all this year. Congrats to the Americans on the win, they deserved it. I look forward to watching John Gibson and Jacob Trouba play in the NHL in the upcoming years, they look like they may become all-star caliber players. I can't say the same for Alex Galchenyuk because he was drafted by the team I loathe.

Great to see another baseball fan! I'll be keepin my eye on Canada, Japan, US, and all of South Americans. Canada is obvously who I want to win, but I highly doubt they will. I like watching prospects play in any sport when they have something to play for. Can't wait.

Oh don't worry, I've become an expert at hating on Rather. Great opportunity, life experience, work experience, adventure, all great things that'll come from going on this trip. I know I've been teasing you about leaving but honestly I wish you the best of luck and I hope you stay safe and out of trouble.

Hey guys and gals, I really do appreciate the donations but please don't feel obligated to donate. We have had plenty of generous people donate already and I don't want anyone feeling obligated to donate because of Christmas or what have you. I really appreciate everything you guys have done, are doing, and will be doing for the unit but remember life comes first and this game comes second. We have enough money to run the servers for 5 months and it's all because of you (and a big thanks goes to Brown for planning all of this). It really did make my day to see that you guys planned to do this for the unit and I'm truly truly grateful for it. You all are the reason why the C-Staff and I work hard to keep this train running every month and we're proud of what we've all accomplished here and continue to accomplish every day. Thank you again for all your support.

Contest Announcement The contest ends January 6th so get your time in now and you could win some awesome games from steam. As for the recruitment bonus prize, we have recruited 7 people so far and we need 15. If you are wondering whether that number changed or not, yes it did. I lowered from 20 recruits down to 15 recruits because I really want you guys to win. There's still a whole week to get those recruits in so get out there and recruit. Hey, even if you don't want any of these prizes you should still go out and get some new blood for our unit. In the end, this contest was made to appreciate the hard work that many of you put into this community and help the 1st MRB grow with a great pub rank and new members to help fill it. I understand there were some hiccups with the server last month that may have limited everyone's potential playing time, but let's start the new year with a bang and forget the past. Lets get the best god damn server in DoD:S back to number 1. I hope everyone's holidays were wonderful and I look forward to getting back into the swing of things with all of you once again. Keep kicking ass and taking names and good luck to everyone in the contest.
