Question

I have NO sound, speakers or headset. I was innocently playing league of legends when my computer was cursed and the musical sounds of death and destruction (my own, unfortunately) were annihilated from my computer!! GONE!

So we've (magoo, janke and myself) tried multiple tricks to no avail...

I've updated my drivers, I'm up to date with all windows updates and prior to any updates, tried a system restore. I'm running win7, my audio is realtek; motherboard: EVGA X58 SL13. Windows isn't reading my audio devices, instead it's using my monitor (which doesn't have speakers) as the primary device. No other devices, inactive or working, show up on any list.

I'm on my laptop for the moment, but it's painfully inferior!

Wait a minute, is your monitor plugged in via an HDMI cable, or do you know if your video card supports audio-through-DVI, for when DVI is converted to HDMI? If so, it could be something in the drivers for your video card, though I'm not sure what. I know that both video and audio can be simultaneously transferred over HDMI, and I know my old video card supported audio-through-DVI, because it had a DVI to HDMI converter, which would allow the audio signal to be transferred over the HDMI cable plugged into the adapter. I don't know where the setting in the video card drivers would be, but that could be a place to check.

What video card do you have? I would uninstall it, and then re-install. This time, Uncheck the option which allows audio over your video card.

Also, which version of windows are you running and does it have your speakers/headset set as the default?

Uninstall your video driver, and then re-install. Choose customer install. There should be an option to install HDMI or sound. Uncheck that box. Then your monitor should no longer be able to be recognized as a sound output.

Just so you know, this is one of the most frustrating Windows 7 bugs for me. And, nice video card. I've got the same one.

After uninstalling the video driver - my computer still won't recognize audio devices. Reinstalling the driver won't let me choose any options such as "custom". It downloads the driver automatically.

Also, it lists 4 "High Definition Audio Device" under sound in device management

Sounds like the same issue, they recommend turning off HD Audio in Bios? Not sure what that will do since you WANT to use the sound on your mobo.

The last post the guy says to look in the Bios to see if the HD Audio is enabled.

Basically what's going on here is that your PC has somehow told itself that the only way it's going to send the audio is via the HDMI cable. We've got to figure out a way so that it no longer thinks this way and registered the audio drivers appropriately.

This may sound like a stupid question, but do you have the realtek hd audio codecs installed?

I was having sound problems a while ago but i re-installed tge codecs and it fixed it (somehow)

Is the sound card something like nvidia hdmi audio?

I doubt this'll help but it can't hurt.

Edit: also, check the services tab in task manager and the services in the management console, i think realtek run some processes to decode sound etc and these can randomly just turn off

Yes, the problem is related to her HDMI. Her audio wants to go through her HDMI regardless of what drivers she has installed.

Also when she installs the realtek drivers, it installs something like 2-4 of them. It's a bit peculiar.

Asus Xonar has got the best bang for the buck right now. Around $30 for great sound.

Here is 11 pages of audio card review. I never knew I needed to know 10 of it. But, it at least gives you some pretty graphs to look at.

And here is the card I recommend:

$24.99 after the rebate.
