As most of you know I am a recent graduate who holds a teaching degree and liscense in the state of Ohio. I am currently a substitute looking for a full time job. I recently went back to Wadswroth High School, the school in which I did my student teaching, for a sub job where I was informed by my former students that another student teacher who taught at the school at the same time as me is most likely going to jail. Her name is Kristin Ostmann and is being charged with 4 counts of Sexual Battery for sleeping with a student who attended the school she taught at...

Kristin Ostmann

The link above has the article that explains it more.

I worked with this woman, and actually served her lunch meat at the deli where I work part time since I don't have a full time teaching job. I am actually shocked at the fact that she pretty much threw away her last 4 years of her life and potentially the next 25 for some tail... I am also very disappointed because she was able to attain a job in these times and has effectively thrown it away.

What are your opinions. Yes I know he was 18, but he was still enrolled in the school and she was a person in a position of trust and this is why she is getting in trouble. So please keep away from the "Its every guys fantasy" or "WTF he was 18" comments.

I thought for a second the topic said "Teachey doing bad things" lol

But on a serious note it is a bit odd and a bit wrong, she doesn't look like the type that would do something like that. Then again you cannot go by looks or how they act until you trully know them.

Yeah. I agree with you on the looks thing. She was also kind of snobby towards me when I spoke with her at the school. The other thing I can remember about her was that she had a boyfriend who worked in Cleveland and they had been dating for years. So she may have cheated on him with this kid basically... I was just floored when the kids told me this. Spent a good part of the day reading the articles and understanding what she was getting charged with.

In HS I asked a teacher out on a date. I was 17 - it was my senior year and she was my whatever english class I took teacher. She was young (early 20's) and we hit it off quite well.

We were into similar music and such, and I came across an extra ticket to see one of our favorite bands - so I asked her. She originally agreed and I was stoked! She backed out the day before the concert saying it just wouldn't be right and while it was an innocent thing just going to the concert she was afraid others might think otherwise and it could lead to issues.

Looking back I was really let down, but I knew then as I do now, she did the right thing. When I graduated we talked a bit more but it never went anywhere. She was so cool!

I think it's a tough call in some cases, I think in situations like this it really would be hard to call her 'guilty', especially if he was 18. I know, she was in a position of power but really he IS 18. He can make his own decisions, by every legal determination outside of gambling he's an adult and in charge of his own decisions.

In the cases where the boys are 14, 15, 16, even 17 - I can understand those charges. But at 18 I think there has to be a rationalization that an adult, is an adult.

I think it would've been better handled had she said 'wait until you graduate', because then there would be no issue at all. It was a lapse in judgement on her part for which I think the punishment in no way, shape or form fits the crime.

Just my $.02

I thought the same thing so I looked up what sexual battery ment in ohio and found that there is a specific law stating that teachers are not allowed to have sex with students even if they are acults until they are no longer a part of the school system. That's whh she is getting hit with this.

Interesting atory though. I would never have the balls to ask a teacher out in high school.

I didn't realize that was so specific in the law. That's pretty surprising. I can understand why it's there though, and if it's outlined that way she should have been aware of it. Ignorance really isn't that great of an excuse in a case like this.

That said, if some 18 yo girl tells you she's an adult - run! Because if she say's she's 18, she's probably not. 15 will get ya' 30!

I always found the Teacher-Student laws interesting. Atleast around here, you're not even supposed to socialize with a teacher outside of school - so, if a teacher goes to a bar and sees some of his/her students there, the teacher is supposed to leave (though I think this applies to all school staff as well).

So, in some respects, I'm on the fence with this issue. It just seems a bit strict to me.
