Wireless Router Issues, Help Please!

Question

Posted

To whom it may concern,

Hey I just got my internet set up though at&t, my modem(Motorola) is working fine. I am having issues connecting my wireless router (linksys) to my modem. In the past it has just been a plug and play with my wireless router, but now when i connect the modem to the router I am having major issues. It seems like i can connect to the "internet" (I can access vent and play on steam) but i cannot use any web browsers. This issue is occurring both on my XPS laptop (PC) and my G/F's macbook. With connecting to steam, I can play the game but the browser part of steam says i am not connected. I can connect directly though my modem, so i would love to talk to someone over vent and hopefully resolve this issue. I would like to fix this issue without paying at&t or geek sqaud for a hopefully simple resolution to my problem (My G/F is pissed that I'm always hard wiring to the modem).

Thanks for all your help and concern.

The at&t guy did not set up the router and neither did I. It had been set up years ago by an old roommate. I don't know how to look at the settings. Pretty pathetic. How do i go about looking at the settings.

Thanks for your help,

Well, if your old roomie set it up, it could've been configured for a different thing all together, that could cause some issues.

However, if AT&T gave you a modem with DHCP (modem/router in one) you could also be having some issues, as your router is trying to do the same thing as your modem and it's getting all funky.

What kind of modem?

I've had router issues in the past with DSL service that I had to resolve by setting the DSL modem to bridge mode. But that takes a little know-how. To start off you should check the settings on the router. Usually routers will have either the default IP address or a web address you put into your web browser to get into the control panel. Check and see if that's on there. If it is, try to get into the controls. If that doesn't work, your roommate may have changed the IP of the router and you will probably have to completely reset it. Usually there is a small reset button you push in with a pen that you hold down for 15 seconds or so and it'll factory default.

Modem - Motorola (style-MSTATEA) and Router (Linksys model WRT54G v4.....Wireless G broadcast router).

I I'm almost 99% sure that the modem is just a modem, not a duel modem/router.

At&t guy said i might have to have to set the modem up to bridge mode, if it didn't just work when I plugged it in. So that may be a way to resolve it. I will try go onto Linksys web site or other pages to try to figure out the settings of the router for hopefully an easy fix. What do i do with the setting of the Router to configure it to the modem? But i may need to ask more about setting up the bridge mode if the linksys settings does not help.

Thanks for all your help, very much appreciated.

To configure the modem in bridge mode you actually have to connect straight to the modem and go into the configuration. You'll have to know your account username and password for Att. That would be the e-mail address and password you set up when you first got the account. If you look through the control panel optios you will find an option to change to bridged mode.

Now in some cases you will be able to put in your pppoe info on the router's control panel and it'll work, but the last time I had to do this with Att that didn't work and I was forced to go bridged mode on the modem.
