New Computer Building

Im sure one of you fantastically magical computer builders knows the answer to this:

I might be building a computer this Fall, and I need a list of all the parts needed.

Why?

1) I am extremely new at this and have no clue

2) Everyone says it is cheaper, and

3) It would be so cool!!

If someone could just help me with the list so I can go on Newegg or TigerDirect and start putting it together

it would be much appreciated

You will need:

Motherboard

Processor

Heatsink/fan combo for your processor

RAM

Hard drive(s)

Video card

DVD drive (Blu Ray if you want to get fancy)

Case

Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor if you don't have those already or want to upgrade.

A good thing to do is go on Newegg.com and look at the bundles they have available. Most of the time you can get a good deal on most of the parts in one fell swoop and add on anything that doesn't come in the bundle. This is also good because if you don't know much about hardware you won't have to match which RAM you're getting with which Motherboard with which CPU you get.

Additionally, most processors come with their own heatsink/fan, but I would recommend scrapping the shitty heatsink goo that they have on it. Try getting your hands on some Artic Cooling Thermal Grease and slap that on there (be generous with it, a good even coat will do you perfectly) It'll keep your processor a lot cooler than the factory stuff

2 details: Are you going to put Windows 7 on this? If so, get another 4 GB of RAM. The i5 is a good processor so you should be good there. Only thing that really makes me a bit wary is the mocro ATX motherboard. It'll work fine, but it's really small and I hate working with such small mobos because you've got to get everything plugged into it and that's a pain on those little guys. Power supply might be a little wimpy too...

If you plan on using Windows 7, yeah. Windows XP only recognizes 4 GB of RAM max.

It's actually all 32 bit Operating Systems ... I would know .. I've got 8 Gigs install and still running Vista 32 bit ... haven't gotten around to upgrading yet sadly lol

If you're buying one part at a time, buy your video card last (there will be a better one by the time you finish building). Once you pick and buy your motherboard, you're going to build around that.
