KONY 2012!

While raising awareness is never a bad thing, I would take anything Invisible Children puts out there with a grain of salt.

They've gotten themselves into a lot of trouble in the past for manipulating facts into what are essentially lies to boost donations, and relatively little of the money they make goes directly to helping children. In fact, a fair amount of the money they don't spend on making these movies goes to the Ugandan army, which has a shoddy human rights record and been involved in rapes and extra-judicial killings.

This is kind of a personal issue for me, because my mom has worked with farmers in many parts of Africa before, including Uganda, and she's told me most of the time the aid people really need is access to clean drinking water and medical supplies, not a manhunt for a warlord who fell out of power 6 years ago.

But I don't want to be a purely negative Nancy. If you really want to help kids in Uganda, a good place to donate to is UNICEF. They've got a specific program for Uganda, and have already set up clinics to distribute, among other things, the polio vaccine, and tetanus shots.

My two cents...

I find that this article (Article on Kony 2012) adresses several points that should be carefully considered before anyone thinks about donating to Invisible Children. I've personally been a donator of UNICEF on and off for the past 3-4 years, and I can say I'm confident my money goes in the right places.

I met the three guys most involved with Invisible Children back in.. shoot, 2005 or 2006. It was pretty much all grassroots. They were looking for people to drive cars or RV's and just start letting people know about what was going on there. Personally, I have no issue with their financials because they took all of their volunteers who was driving around doing stuff and going to Africa and actually paid for them to do stuff and go to Africa. It was a good thing.

As for the KONY thing, he's a war criminal. There are some war criminals that are simply allowed to be out there, and uncaught, because they made a deal. I would not be surprised if that were the case here.

Back around 99-00, there was a group of journalists who wanted to find a war criminal, Radovan Karadžić. Took the 5 guys a couple of months, but they found him. The article I read back then stated that if the UN/NATO/whoever wanted to find him, it wouldn't have been that hard.

While the things Kony has been doing are atrocious, he hasn't been very active in the last few years, and has been doing this for well over 2 decades, and I'm wondering why the hell is he such a big deal NOW as opposed to 20 years ago when this started, or 2006 when my church aired a video about this same issue, or any time in between when this stuff started and now? I personally think there's ulterior motives to this whole issue, I think it's not all about catching a war criminal, there's more to it than that, most likely something that benefits the US government or NATO in some way. That, and I've heard stories about mismanagement of money both by Invisible Children, such as only a few cents on the dollar going to Uganda for/from this, and mismanagement of the little money the Ugandan government gets by the Ugandan government, and I won't support government corruption.

That, and after this guy got arrested for public masturbation, I can't take this thing at all seriously anymore.
