Game of Thrones

My boss heard my co-workers and I talking about Game of Thrones and she heard me say that I wanted to read the books before getting into the show. She came out and said "Wait, you want to read a book?!" I said yes of course, I love reading. A couple days later she brings me Game of Thrones paperback and says "Keep it, I didn't like the book. It was too similar to Lord of the Rings for me to enjoy."

Long story short, I've been reading the first installment and am really enjoying it.

Thats what has put me off from reading the books. I got throught the first Lord of the rings book and about half way through the 2nd, just couldn't stand the way it was written. Each to their own I suppose

Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones for you wimps) and Lord of the Rings are such different books. They read completely different from each other. Very few people could ever encompass Tolkien's writing style, and thankfully George Martin doesn't try. I actually met George Martin a couple years ago (true story) when he came to a local book store for a book signing of his new book, The Ice Dragon, which if you can believe is a children's book. I had gone to meet him because I was reading Ice and Fire books, and because he used to teach at a local school.

Very awesome old dude. Martin taught at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. Granted that was long before I was born, but he made a special point to return to Dubuque.

+1 Kirkendall

I read the books because I saw the TV serie and holy balls is it different from Tolkien. A lot more poignant IMO, even though I loved the lord of the rings trilogy.

The 2 main differences to me are

1: That Tolkien tells, and Martin shows.

2: Tolkien will establish his setting at the start of his writting (Read also: Why there's 100 pages describing the shire and the hobbits before the adventure even begins), whereas Martin will have you discover his setting bit by bit.

EDIT: I'm also frigging jealous you got to meet him.

Whilst I like Tolkein, I do think what he did and what Martin is doing are very different.

Tolkeins whole purpose was to imagine an entirely new Mythos from scratch... with the aim being that his novels weren't "stories" but instead a history of that mythological world. Hense the entire thing is written in a kind of dispationate record-keeping way. (Check out the silmarillion if you can bear it... its sooo dry!) Martin is writing a book which could very well be set in the real world... sure there is magic and dragons, but that is mostly incidental to the main point of the stories: various shades of bastard vying for ultimate power, and stabbing each other in the back to get there.

Both good, and whilst I like Tolkein for the breathtaking scope of what he's tried to achieve, I think that Martins novels (and the TV adaptation) are just much more gripping!

If you're put off this kind of thing because of Tolkeins dry writing style, don't worry about that with Martin - his books are un-put-downable.

Found this quiet entertaining, enjoy

Entertaining, yes. But the incessant porn music playing over the critique is confusing me. Is she making an observation about the over-the-top sexual nature of the show, reflecting how HBO takes a ham-handed approach to sexuality in their programming; or alternately, does she just have shitty taste in ambient music?

Can't tell if brilliant or in bad taste...

I'm buying Season 2 tomorrow or the next day when it comes out, I must say I'm very impressed with how close HBO is being to the books, and I'm glad Martin is personally on board for them. As for favourite chars? I have way too many that span into too many families and groups to put on here, so I'll just put a couple of my favourite families: Stark, Targaryean, Martell, and Lannister in that order. Martin is definately the Tolkien of our generation with these books, but even he cannot match the level of depth that Tolkien went into, which is good because too much can bore your reader. I hope HBO continues with the series all the way though, I'd hate for them to end it after the third book (they originally only confirmed three seasons, but since they are splitting the third book in half with a fourth season, I'm encouraged they'll go the whole way with it).

I think as long as it keeps up its popularity they will keep going. IMO one of the best shows out there right now, just sucks having to wait so long between seasons lol
