Well the thing is who is going to take the lead on this... because at this point in time a small group of people will need to put alot of time into getting things rolling. I would love to but i already have so many things on my plate but if you give it some time i am sure we can start getting merchandise out.

I don't think you can put anything on merch that is from valve or steam since they're not directly selling it. Remember that people created the insignia's that we would use on merch. We're also representing an actual marine unit. This means we're replicating something and need permissions to advertise for it. I think it's still a good idea, but before anything happens more research is needed on this.

I would rather we avoid dabbling in copyrights. Even if we were to claim copyright on any of the things we make it would cost us quite a bit in legal fees. Not to mention, we already dance on the line of infringement from Valve, the US Military as well as whatever else we are using without permission by accepting donations. Merchandising the unit would probably put us on the map with everyone's legal departments.

I'm sure there's leniency in the law for what we do, and we probably could claim non-profit or whatever... As expansive as checking wikipedia for legal advice, and considering that I am not a lawyer, we would need to find someone with actual knowledge and experience in these areas.

Yama is certainly on the correct train of thought.

Myself, dealing with website design (with integrated services) in the past, have had to deal with copyright issues for clients too often. Sadly, though the idea is very creative, it would be difficult to execute in a legal manner, without prior granted permissions.

I would not adivise putting anything related to DOD:S, or the 1st MRB's name (logo is fine) on any merchandise, to avoid problems with Valve, or the US armed forces.

If we begin to coordinate a decent effort on this, it would be simple enough to contact the proper representatives to gain permission to use the 1st MRB name on merchandise. If it can be shown that we are not attempting to present the name in a bad light, or gain personal wealth or power from the idea/name, it is likely that we will be granted permission to use the name. Though, as usual, it depends on who we end up dealing with. Certain people will be willing to put more effort into our request than others.

Copyright permissions do not always need to be a major legal action. Many requests are as simple as an email. A simple screenshot and/or saved copy of the email is valid proof of permission, unless we begin bringing in large profits (given the sources of income) via sales and donations.

A hobbyists license is acquired through contacting appropriate persons through mail, and the correct forms, not so much through email.

At least when you are directing it at the Marines. Valve may be attainable through email.

Also, Holland, I don't think Parker's made a post on this thread.
