Question

Posted (edited)

Name: P. Jablonski

Rank: Cpl.

Type of issue: Hardware/software

Brief Description of Issue: A few weeks ago Lent a friend of mine my graphics card, it was a Nvidia 8800gtx. In Dods I would get around 150 fps on all max no matter the conditions. After taking it out I cant do anything. Im am stuck playing on minimum and if I go near any smoke or get in a large fire fight It gets choppy and laggy as hell. Going 30 kills to 15 deaths was not that hard for me but now im lucky I can get 1 kill every 4-5 deaths. My pc set up is:

-Processor: AMD Phenom™ II X4 3.00 GHz

-4 GB ram

-XPower 1080w power supply

-Asus motherboard (dont remember the model)

-on board ATI Radeon HD 4250

so there is no reason as far as i can tell that i shouldnt be able to play it on max or minimum at least.

No, i just started using the onboard. Witch I know can handle the game because it used to no problem. I think i have a screenshot somewhere of me playing CSS and Crysis wars at the same time on here with out a problem somewhere from before i had the gtx.

... like replacing a Ferrari engine with a Citroen.

Best analogy ever. And I know the on board is total poop but it used to run the game fine and now that I returned to it, it dosnt which is what im so confused about.

Irs all about what your used to...mine always seemed fine until I got a. Gtx 560ti and now when I play on my old rig I just get spoiled. So its not that it neasicarily changed it it just wasn't.what you were uses to. And also I believe this happens automaticly but check to make sure it is using the on.board aa the priority. Because for all we know its looking for your old one

Hmmm... I've not used AMD cards for a long time (bit of an NVidia fanboy myself).

Looking at the specs of the HD 4250 though, it should be powerful enough to run source games, but not necessarily very well.

Question asked on valve forums... consensus is that it'll work, but not great

One of the main issues with any onboard GPU is shared memory. They tend to cannibalise the system memory, which is much slower,

first because the GPU has to operate at the bus-speed of your motherboard (usually much slower than the internal rate of a dedicated card)

and secondly because the GPU is also contending with the CPU for access to that memory, lowering speed and available system memory.

Tweaks:

1) In general, stop as many background processes and services as you can, to free up CPU cycles and memory.

2) Also, maybe take a look in your BIOS, to see what settings are available to do with your onboard GPU... you should be able to configure it to have a larger

dedicated slice of system memory, and there maybe some other settings specific to your motherboard that can help to get a bit more performance.

Overclock (not recommended, but possible):

Some BIOS's allow you to boost the voltage and clock speed of an onboard GPU, to overclock it seperately from the rest of the system.

If such options are not available, you maybe could overclock your frontside-bus, which I believe will result in overclocking any integrated graphics, but it would

also basically overclock the entire system, so I really wouldn't recommend it as the performance gain would be tiny, for massive risk of burning components out.

I would always recommend reading a lot of info about this before attempting it!

My main recommendation would be to get hold of a cheap dedicated replacement card. For only $50 you can probably find a new card, 2 or 3 generations later

than the 8800gtx, such as something in the NVidia 4XX series. Or for a bit more cash, the 5XX or 6XX series is available.

Anything like that should play source games at max settings, no problem.

Bryant, I think youve hit the nail on the head. nothing i do seems to make a difference so its probably just because ive gotten so used to a great game play to an epic fail at an attempt to make something that should "do graphics" that it will just never be the same untill i get it back or a new card.

To Cutts: I dabbled a bit in overclocking a while back and I was up at around 3.8 ghz I believe but then I started having issues and out of laziness I dropped it back to 3.3 or something. This was back when I still had the 8800gtx
