Resolved - Help Peaker Build a new Computer!

Question

Posted

Name: Sam Peaker

Rank: Sergeant

Type of issue: Hardware I guess!

Brief Description of Issue: So it's that time of the year, my Mac laptop is starting to show it's age, and i've decided to invest in a new desktop computer, for pure gaming purposes. My budget is between 1500 and 2000 Canadian dollars, and I would like to basically have a nuclear reactor for that price. If it goes a bit over 2000 with shipping it's not a big deal either. So I thought I would turn to the medical supply office, who is undoubtedly more knowledgeable in those matters than I am. I have been toying around with this site: http://www.ibuypower.com/ , where they have a father's day sale and you get a ton of free upgrades for free, so if that's advantageous for me, i'd definitely want to take advantage of that. A friend also referred me to this site: www.ncix.com . So gentlemen, I guess, do your worst?

Thanks in advance for the help!

For that kind of budget you can get a really good gaming rig. Here's maybe a few suggestions

CPU: Core i7 2600K or better

RAM: 8GB DDR3 (can play around with what particular speed you want)

Motherboard: LGA 1155 board. Motherboards come in all types of flavours but personally I prefer Asus P8Z68 boards

Hard Drives: Solid State drive or 2 regular 500GB in raid and 1tb in storage

Power Supply: 850 Watt or better should give your board plenty of power and room for expansions

Video Card: GeForce GTX 560ti or better

Monitor: 22" full HD LCD

Mouse/Keyboard: Razor

I like the sound of that, I was thinking about 12 GB of RAM instead, but do you have any particular recommendations as to where I should get it from? Or did you use the sites I previously mentioned? And yes, for my principal games, I do want a SSD, thanks a lot for mentioning it haha.

I am a big fan of Newegg they have a large selection and are generally very easy to work with. I recommend doing some research on Newegg as well as others like Tom's Hardware and Cnet and read reviews on the various components you are looking at. One of the biggest things to consider when building a new computer is compatibility so it's important to familiarize yourself with the parts you want before you buy. If the specs Marchese listed seem to be a reasonable benchmark you can start customizing it by looking up different parts such as the increased RAM you mentioned to tailor that list to your needs. Post back when you have a chance and we can get started on this project.

Here's some random stuff that should turn into a raging beast....

http://secure.newegg.ca/WishList/PublicWis...Number=15436214

I'm sure a bunch of people will tell me that i chose all the wrong parts, or at least that I've gone crazy on the CPU... which I did. If you need a monitor and peripherals I didn't take that into account.

You may want to switch out the CPU/Motherboard for a 2700k and a motherboard compatible with that to save a couple hundred bucks, it'll knock down the cpu's capability a fair bit, but i'm sure you don't actually need that much anyway.

Might be smart to run SLI with a 2700k instead, but if you do that make sure you swap out the power supply, that one isn't high enough wattage for 2 video cards.

I would spend the extra few bucks on windows pro, i've had random weird problems with home editions of windows

oh, also i heard the crucial SSDs are more reliable, and i don't see a dvd or bluray drive.
