At least 14 people have been killed in a shooting at a Batman film premiere in the US city of Denver, police say.

About 50 people have been injured in the incident at the cinema complex in the suburb of Aurora.

Witnesses say a gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

A man was arrested in a car park nearby in possession of a rifle and hand-gun. He told police that explosives were stored at his home.

Police chief Dan Oates told reporters that an apartment block in the north of Aurora had been evacuated as a consequence of that information.

More weapons may have been left in the cinema, he said.

'No terrorism link'

The incident at the Century 16 cinema complex began at approximately 00:30 local time (06:30 GMT).

"Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire," the police chief said.

"The shooting apparently went on for some time," he said.

Ten people were killed at the cinema and four others died later at hospital of their wounds, he said.

The FBI, which is working with the police, say there is no terrorism link so far in their investigations, ABC reports.

Many ambulances at the scene and the Swedish Medical Center, not the area's main hospital, told the BBC it had received several gunshot victims and expected more.

One witness said a man in a bullet-proof vest and riot helmet had been "slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing - picking random people".

An eyewitness told the BBC that about 30 or 40 minutes into the film a man came into the right-hand exit nearest the front row.

"I'm pretty sure wearing [a] mask. He fired a canister into the air - it could have been a smoke bomb or tear gas," the woman, identified only as Pam, told the BBC.

"It shot it right into the air, then I started to hear the bang, bang, bang of a gun.

"I crawled my way through the row, luckily the exit was close to where I was sitting so I got out pretty fast. I heard more shots as I left," she said.

A witness in the next-door theatre told 9News that when he heard loud bangs and a lot of smoke and initially thought they were live special effects put on by the cinema.

Projectiles came through the wall from the neighbouring screening, he said.

Who the hell does this guy think he is? What a freaking mindless idiot. He deserves to die slowly and painfully. To the people who think capitol punishment is never necessary: how about now? Fucking people these days.... fuck.

To answer your question about capital punishment the answer from me is no. Rotting in jail for the rest of his miserable life is good enough for me (btw executing someone is more expensive than keeping him in jail from paying lawyers for appeals and being on death row). Now having said that if one of the victims family members kills him you know what I wouldn't blame them for it.

I live in Colorado and went to go see the midnight showing of Batman and thankfully was not at this theater but this stupid and senseless tragedy has effected me.

My very good friend and her family from Aurora were at that movie theater and although not in the same theater, they were apart of all the chaos and panic.

Another friend of mine, Peter, lost his old roommate and a good friend in the shooting.

"Please pray for my friend and old roommate who was shot at the theater last night in Aurora, and for all those affected by this senseless tragedy."

Another friend of mind Seth also had someone he knows at the shooting.

"My Videographer Jason was at The darknight screening last Night during The shooting. He and his 3 Kids are safe prayers Go out to those who were not as fortunate"

and I am now learning my friend Matt and his cousins-in-laws are in critical condition at the hospital.

I am at a complete lost for words right now.

I hope Rather is okay, yesterday he told us he was going out to watch the new Batman movie. I think he lives in Colorado too.

Rather lives about 2 hours from that movie theater, he should be OK.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm sure anyone in the Unit is here if you need someone to talk to. Please keep us updated on their conditions.

Things like this... piss me off. I can't comprehend what makes someone think that killing themselves is ok, let alone taking 14 other people with them. Possibly more. If it were up to me this kid would be in a lot of pain right now. Life in prison is too forgiving - the guy took lives. Took lives of even children, and the reason I heard (don't quote me on this) he stated was "The movie was sold out". Prick deserves to die slowly and in extreme pain. This whole incident makes me feel like

Also, Gardiner, I'm sorry to hear about your friends. They didn't deserve that. I think this calls for a special ceremony or something in the private. Like a 21-gun salute, which I volunteer for if possible

I do get where you are coming from Logston and you can take my opinion as just a opinion as you have every right to feel the way you feel. So here's my two cents, yes the guy did a completely horrifying act and deserves punishment but killing him will not change anything. The victims families will still have lost a child/brother/sister and even with revenge the feeling of loss, emptiness and grief will still be there. Letting him rot in a prison cell with only the memory of his act for haunting him for the rest of his life is good enough for me but that's just me. Now if it were one of my loved ones that was lost believe me the guy would never survive long enough make it to a courtroom.

Also for Gardiner I am truly sorry for the loss of any friends or acquaintances in that shooting and hope for a full and speedy recovery for anyone else.

Sad news when defenseless people get slaughtered.

My sympathy goes out to the victims and the survivors of this tragedy.

In AZ we protect the 2nd amendment to the Constitution of the United States, Right to Bear Arms.

Arizona Allows Concealed Weapons without a Permit

ARIZONA GUN LAWS

I carry with me every time I am out with my family and in public.

These psychopaths all have a smirk on their faces. I bet getting a pile driver in the ass a few times will take it off in prison.

Sad news again.

It was announced yesterday that it was 12 deceased and 59 injured. I was at the station when the news came over the wire and we followed the story all day. It's rough enough to hear stories from witnesses all day, I can't even imagine being there or knowing someone who was.

I'm so sorry about your friends Gardiner, and I hope they recover.

I think there's probably already a thread on capital punishment, and probably one on gun laws- I really don't think this is the place for that. People will say the same arguments, nothing will change, and this kind of tragedy will happen again.

Thoughts and prayers with the victims and their friends and families
