Question

Posted

Name: Morton, Phil, B

Rank: SGT

Type of issue: Believe its software, but could possibly be hardware.

Brief Description of Issue: When I start up my computer after it boots windows it freezes after 2-4 minutes. I can't move the mouse, can't ctrl+alt+delete, it just sits there. I have rebooted in safe mode, and it works.

I ran a system restore and it seems to fix it. I forgot about F8 on start up to access the repair options. For some reason system restore wasn't working through safe mode. Running a full malware scan now. Hopefully it was a bug and not something catastrophic.

During start-up, there are many, many things that are going on in the background. It is common for a windows file to be missing/damaged for various reasons, resulting in this behavior during start-up. Could be caused by anything from malware, to simply incorrectly shutting down your computer during an update.

For the latter, always make sure you are shutting down your computer via the start menu > shutdown where possible.
