I emailed my local recruiting office on Saturday looking for some info on paygrades and tuition. I'm 17. The recruitment office just called me, and they said I have to be 18 to make the commitment. And basically hung up after I said I want to enlist in active duty. Now I have to go talk to the same person when they come to my school during lunch (awkward). :(

Same in sweden, when i turned 18 years old for some weeks ago i got a recruitment letter home, and i had to go on the web and write all my personal information to them if they start to take in people for the army again.

Yeah last year during the October storm in CT i had no power for 9 days and a recruitment officer decided that was the best time to show up at my house and try to talk to me about enlisting. Nothing against the military but that was a dick move.

You're allowed to enlist with your parents' permission. They'll basically put you in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) until your school is over. (I was 17 when I wanted to enlist as well, was in the DEP for 10 months) Here's a link to see the Military Pay Chart 2012

He said that I also have to be a senior (I'm a Junior). I'm gonna talk to the school counselor and see when he's scheduled to come to the cafeteria to see if I can squeeze any info about NROTC vs GED enlistment

My roommate and his friend took the NROTC route, you definitely want to try for Officer if you can. His reasoning was if he could not make it in the Marines as an officer he'd just go enlisted and have a college degree to fall back on afterwards.

Such sound reasoning, I almost did the same.

I'm leaning towards NROTC, just so that I can show up as a 2ndLt. and take command of a tank

You'll need to do extremely well to get on the train to tankville. I have a classmate who tried to be a tanker, but they ended up assigning him to Ordnance officer. His number one choice was tanks, followed by cavalry, unfortunately now, according to him, everyone else will get to fight while he stands around counting bullets.
