Closed - Random Crash on Map changes

Gardner2

Question

Name: K.Gardner

Rank: SSgt.

Type of issue: (Software, Hardware, Steam, Not sure) Software?

Brief Description of Issue:

Randomally, maybe 1 in 4 map changes DoD:S will crash and either shut down with an error window saying its crashed and do I want to close the program message, or it will crash and just hang then I have to do a forced closed in the task manager on it.

Does this both with a wired and wireless connection. Both with no other usuage on the net in the house, and with usuage.

Does not matter if I run steam as an adminstrator or not.

I'm typically between 60 and 70 ping.

Both on the private and pub server.

I am using Dillion's config thats posted and have been for months ( http://www.1stmarineraiders.com/index.php?showtopic=7120 ). No skins.

And I have all the map packs downloaded and installed.

You appear to be using Windows 7?

I'm not certain of this, but sometimes when hl2.exe crashes out with exception code C0000005

that can be fixed by running it in Windows XP (Service Pack 3) compatibility mode. Give that a

go and it might fix it.

Someone with a similar problem: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...d.php?t=2589743

I hope that helps!

k, made it worse, not the game crashes as soon as it loads the main menu of DoD:s

gives me this error:

Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: BEX

Application Name: hl2.exe

Application Version: 0.0.0.0

Application Timestamp: 50aaaa87

I turned off the compatibility mode option, and it still crashes now......

Tried a verification of local game files, still crashes at the main menu now.

Also gives this one:

Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Name: hl2.exe

Application Version: 0.0.0.0

I'm going to try deleting my local content and reinstalling to see if this work, then I'll just need to try and get all my binds reset again lol

*edit* I see a few other members are having a crash at start up issue now as well, I'm almost done redownloading the game, will update if this fixes it. http://www.1stmarineraiders.com/index.php?showtopic=20526

*edit 2* a complete uninstall and reinstall does not fix this either. I also ran CCleaner, and my antivirus again just to make sure. I can still run CounterStrike, CounterStrike: Global, and TF2 with no issues.

Current error message is:

Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Name: hl2.exe

Quick question... you say this generally happens after a map change, right?

Is it on a change to any map, or some specific maps? Might be the map, possibly.

Map seems to be random (although I think I've seen it on Avalanche, Donner mainly, although in the private its happened on some of the custom maps during practice/realisms when changing from donner to the custom map), usually I get to the new maps main menu screen where you press enter before selecting a team. It's at that point it will either crash and close the game, or hangs up and I have to force close the game.

Try rebuilding your steam install. This can be accomplished by shutting down steam then going to your steam folder (typically c:\Program Files (x86)\steam) and delete everything except:

steamapps (folder)

userdata (folder)

steam.exe (application)

Then re-launch steam.exe.

Done that as well as a complete uninstall and reinstall of the game.

Disable the Windows Aero extension as a first attempt.

Test the effect.

If it fails, disable multicore rendering as well, try it again (having both the extension, and multicore rendering disabled)

I do not guarantee that either of these will help, though as I can't seem to reproduce the problem myself, I need to work it through on yours.

As a last resort, attempt dropping the directx setting to dx8 (input -dxlevel 80 into the launch options). Confirm it is set to the appropriate dx level by looking in the in-game options. The game will likely look like shit, but it will test something I had in mind. If this ends up resolving the crashes, enable the settings I previously told you to disable.

If the above does not work, attempt setting it to dx10 (input -dxlevel 100 into the launch options). Confirm it is set to the appropriate dx level by looking in the in-game options. If this ends up resolving the crashes, enable the settings I previously told you to disable.

If either of the above result in immediate crashes, or other unexpected issues, set it back to dx9 (input -dxlevel 90 into the launch options). Confirm it is set to the appropriate dx level by looking in the in-game options.

Does this happen in singleplayer as well?

Go into your in-game options, click the multiplayer tab.

Click the advanced button.

Disable both of the film grain effect options.

Make sure you click the "apply" button in the options menu.

If all else fails, I am going to go a little abstract, and suggest you install a scoreboard other than the default.

Look here.
