Part of the problem with that is there are pitches the computer would call strikes that do not look like strikes when watching them.

I.E the hard breakers that technically might hit the bottom of the zone, but the pitch bounces before the catcher gets it. Hell, you could throw a floater that technically crosses the zone, but no one in their right mind would call a strike.

I umpire HS ball and at the varsity level, it is almost as much about how good the catcher makes it look as well as where the pitch is. If that catcher frames that inside pitch, I will give it to him, but if a bad catcher is jerking the glove or slapping at the ball, he's not getting it.

The batters could adjust I guess to anything touching a given zone being called a strike, but that is not the way the pitches are seen currently.

I guarantee you if you polled the majority of players, and asked if they wanted a computer calling balls and strikes, the NO's would win. I'm not saying it is the human element argument. The whole "it's the history of the game" nonsense, but I bet most players would want to have umpires calling the pitches.

Weaver out for a month or two. Thanks for not trading him to me, Gooderham! I love you.

Yeah, fuck.

The more I watch the replay of that pitch the more I can understand why it was called a strike. It broke very late but was definitely at knee height along the outside corner of the plate when it broke the front. I would love to see an overhead of the pitch.

Also, really interesting article Dillon. I say this kind of thing happens all too frequently, however i cannot offer a remedy for the problem. Some guys on the radio here in Dallas were talking about having an umpire have a device in his ear that signaled balls and strikes, which was linked to a sophisticated pitch tracker. Personally, im against that sort of a system, however there MAY be room for a replay system on game ending pitches like that that are in dispute. Using a football term, there is indisputable evidence on the video that the pitch in question was a ball. Perhaps that sort of ruling could be applied in baseball? Thoughts?

Yeah, the system is already in place. Its called Pitch F/X. Its flawless.

At least he apologized. He did seem sincerely apologetic. Im not buying what Francona said about him slipping though, i'd have to see the numbers on his pitch speed, but even still. Guy seems like a bit of a chump, but since when do you get a suspension for throwing at someone?

Yeah I mean if he did not apologize I am sure he would have been suspended. Also the pitch I think was 91 MPH. That was no slip.

Bleh. Sox 'pen blows two games in a row. Hanrahan's meltdown the other night was epic. Im not sold on him, two games in a row he gives up lead off home runs in the 9th. Kinda scary if you ask me. Luckily, we dont play the O's again until June, which is good cause im sick of Adam Jones :P just glad we got our home opener. Start a series against the last AL East Rival tonight, the Rays. Doubront is gonna blow the game tonight, i already know it.

Man the Yanks' are on a hitting tear right now...maybe that rain with make them lose all their momentum :P

Now Greinke is out with a broken collarbone.

Gooderham, I owe you a blowjob for not accepting my trade.

I'm so fucked. Weaver, Greinke, Harrison, Morse, Aybar and probably Kemp all out.

This is the craziest year I can remember for baseball injuries. Its freaking baseball. There aren't event his many injuries in football. Fortunately, most of the harm has come to Gooderham, who will now discover the joys of having a Replacement Level team, the poor bastard. Maybe its because of the number of top level players who have been knocked out for a significant amount of time. Shoot, 3/4 of the Yankee infield is out, 3 top level pitchers, now Jose Reyes maybe for the season?

Baseball, you are a wacky bitch.
