At this point, I am inclined to believe (by elimination of all other ideas) that this issue is related to shared files between source engine games on your local machine. The unfortunate part is, I have no idea, and no way to find out exactly which file that is.

And so to pull the advice of Cutts from another topic;

Ah man... I've had the same issue before I think.

Back in the day, simply backing up steamapps, reinstalling steam, deleting the fucked game from steamapps and copying the rest back in... worked.

Last time I tried it I didn't have such luck. Some games worked, others didn't.

What I ended up doing was:

Went into my DODS folder, and backed up all my downloaded maps, etc., autoexec.cfg and config.cfg.

Uninstalled ALL valve games. Entirely.

Checked through the steamapps folder for any mention of any valve games.

Load every other game in turn, see if it works. Any that didn't I uninstalled. (backing up any saves I wanted etc.)

Then, re-installed DODS and all the stuff I could be bothered to re-install.

Finally, carefully put back the downloaded maps back into their places in the DODS folder.

It was a massive pain in the arse, but it did eventually solve it.

Slightly cut-down solution

If you can't be arsed to backup stuff (and its not that necessary, since you can download all the DODS maps from our forums easily) then I'd just

Uninstall all source engine games.

Go into the steamapps

Re-install all source engine games.

Do the same for any other game that you can't get to work.

Solution that is most likely to work

NUKE THE LOT.

Essentially, uninstall steam and ALL the games on it, then go into the steam directory and remove anything that might still be hanging around, then

finally go and have a very long wank while you re-install everything.

I'm afraid that's not great help, but sometimes steam can get into a bit of a mess.

i seem to have resolved it for now , will update is anything changes

Despite mountains of suggestions, no resolution has worked for the original poster as of yet. If you have recently started encountering this issue, you may start from the top of the list if you wish, though I cannot guarantee it won't be a complete waste of your time.

The following suggestions have been attempted, and may be re-attempted at your own will.

-Restart your computer

--Ensure all drivers are up to date on your computer, and that you have the latest version of DirectX installed. (Drivers can be updated from the device manager, or manually if you know what the internal components of your computer are.)

---Completely remove any and all custom content from DOD:S, including HUDS, configs, skins, etc. These may be backed up outside of Steam's file system if you do not want to re-download them later.

----Verify game cache (Right click on the game in your Steam library -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify integrity of game cache)

-----Deleting all files inside the main steam folder, except for the Steamapps folder, Steam.exe, and the UserData folder. Run Steam.exe after deleting all other files to re-download a (relatively) clean copy of Steam.

------Open up the command line of DOD:S (Right click on DOD:S in the Steam library -> Properties - > Launch Options) and type "-autoconfig" without quotes into the box that comes up. Click OK and run DOD:S. Should this not work for you, you should remove the -autoconfig command from the launch options.

-------Uninstall any and all Source Engine games from your computer, including DOD:S, then re-download DOD:S only.

--------Nuke the lot. See two posts above.

I've spoken to Arsenault this morning. His crashing problem has been resolved by removing his custom folder. Completely.

This tells me what I had been suspecting earlier in this post, that it is in-fact, a result of an incompatibility in custom content. I would suspect it is from using modifications that are at least partially incompatible with the infamous Steampipe update.

To those of you still having this annoying issue, go into your DOD:S folder, and delete your custom folder (backing up anything you want to save to a different location). From there, you can recreate an empty custom folder and add in content that is known to be working on the current game build.

Please post back if this has worked, or if not, any information that can be given would help us further.

If Arsenault figures out exactly which custom content was causing his problem, the Ordnance Office would love to hear about it.

Roger sir. I've tried figuring it out yesterday but couldn't. I'll try again some time in the near future. If I find what it is, I'll let you know.

Arsenault had Insanes HUD Version 10 installed earlier (not the most recent). I would suspect this being part of the problem.

Topic marked as resolved. If more problems occur, please pose them here.
