Name: Alex Giovannoli

Rank: Sgt

Type of issue: Steam

Brief Description of Issue: No mater what type of picture file or picture I use high quality or low it wont be visible in game when I spray my spray. All my old sprays before the patch work. Anything new does not. Am I putting it in the wrong folder?

Re-import your spray into DOD:S via the multiplayer options.

I am having the same issue. I just tried re importing, but when i spray it nothing appears. All of my old sprays work but I just made a new one and it does not work in game.

Make sure you have your materials folder setup the correct way inside your custom folder so it would look like this dod/custom/nameofyourcustomfolder/materials. I have also run into people having issues if they have steam cloud enabled for DoD:S as its setting your config to before the steampipe update so I recommend turning off Steam Cloud for DoD:S then going into your game and setting your settings how you want them then making your config.cfg read only.

Yea, I do have my materials folder set up correctly, and it shows that i am importing my spray, but when i spray it in game it does not appear.

Is your .cfg file read only before you are using the in-game spray inport? If it is turn it off and save it then open game and try importing it again. My spray never stopped working after the update but I also have my custom folders still in their old directory outside of the custom folder as a backup so maybe you can try putting a copy of your materials folder in the main directory and inside your custom directory so you could also try that.

I am also having this problem, it doesn't even matter if it's a VTF or a jpg. If I just select a random jpg on my desktop from the multiplayer options, the vtf is correctly created in the logos folder, but the spray doesn't show up. The very weird thing is, if i take an old VTF that works and rename it and import it, that DOES work... but not new VTF files. VTF files created with the exact same settings as i used before, made in the same program don't work, turning the old VTF into a jpg and back into a VTF doesn't work, but the old VTF does work.... i really don't get it.

I have been looking into this issue as it pretty much shuts down the QM office but according to the posts i found in the forums, this is a steam issue and we will have to wait till either another update or for them to say something about it. I myself have tried various options to try and fix (move the spray file locations, re-create sprays, etc.) and to no avail anything. I will respond in both this topic and the QM if i find anything.

Found this online : I suspect that you may have played on a server that has changed some of the values in your config. The cvar that deals with downloading custom decals is cl_download_ingame (boolean: 0 disables the download of players custom sprays, 1 enables downloading custom sprays in-game). If my suspicion is correct then opening the console and typing cl_download_ingame 1 should sort the problem.

Edit: After further testing, this is not allowing any sprays made after March 29th (Steampipe update) to be used. I will continue to research the problem.

After a quick browse of the autoexec.cfg, I have come up with a solution that allowed me to view sprays again, as well as use my own.

Navigate to your steam installation folder. From there, go into; steamapps > common > Day of Defeat: Source > dod > cfg. Open the file titled "autoexec.cfg" in any text editor (notepad/wordpad).

Enter the following, putting each command on it's own separate line in the file.

cl_playerspraydisable 0
cl_allowupload 1
r_renderoverlayfragment 1

Save the file, open the game. Re-import your spray into the multiplayer options. Enter any game server, and test your spray.

Note that you must be connected to a server to view sprays. They are disabled by default in single player.

(Not sure if this applies to anyone else but i found it on my steam folders) the commands above stated by holland are also found in the "config.cfg" folder although i highly recommend that you ONLY change (if needed) the lines stated. I could not find the line "r_renderoverlayfragment 1" in this file but i will continue my search.

Did this work? Because it did not work for me.

No, it does not work (I had edited the first line of my post stating that it would not). Originally, I could not see any sprays at all after the update, despite enabling them in-game, this is what was done to re-enable them. I did not anticipate the problems with new sprays not working.

I believe I have narrowed it down to DOD:S itself, as opposed to the .vtf file.

VTF files have "versions". As Valve adds new features to their VTF format, they change the version. It seems that regardless of the VTF version, whether I make it lower or higher, has no effect. All sprays made after March 29th (Steampipe update) fail to display in-game. All sprays made before March 29th work fine. At this time, I have no idea what is causing old sprays to show up but not new ones.

I will keep you all posted on any progress I make.

If thats the case couldn't you use VTFEdit to make sprays if you haven't updated the library yet for it since the steampipe update and would still create the VMT and VTF files using the old system. I know its not currently going to work for everyone but it's worth giving a shot.

I create all my sprays with vtfedit.

I do not believe the issue has anything to do with VTFEdit, as uploading a .tga (or any other supported file type for that matter) directly into the game creates the correct .vtf and vmt files automatically under the games current vtf settings, which also do not work.

I am also quite sure the vtf file version has nothing to do with the issue either, as the vtf version (to my knowledge) did not get updated with the steampipe update. The working sprays made before the update and the not working ones made afterwards are using the same version.

I am at a loss with this issue; Therefore, I am going to list down what I have attempted to this point in hopes that somebody will see something I missed.

I started with a spray that I could confirm worked normally both before and after the update.

Converted the working spray from .vtf format into a .jpg format. Made another copy of the spray in .tga format.

Imported the .jpg image into the game. The correct image displayed below the import option in the menu. The correct .vtf and .vmt files are placed into the dod/materials/vgui/logos folder.

- The spray does not work in our private server.

-- The spray does not work in our public server.

--- The spray does not work in another (non-1stMRB) server.

Imported the .tga image into the game. The correct image is displayed below the import option in the menu. The correct .vtf and .vmt files are placed into the dod/materials/vgui/logos folder.

Took the .jpg and .tga files and converted them back into a .vtf

Placed the .vtf image directly into the dod/materials/vgui/logos folder. Imported it into the game. The correct .vmt file is created and placed in the dod/materials/vgui/logos folder.

- The spray does not work in our private server.

-- The spray does not work in our public server.

--- The spray does not work in another (non-1stMRB) server.

At this point, I decided to check if placing the file directly into various folders related to in-game sprays would create a different reaction. Also checked various game files that deal with loading of files.

Placed the .vtf image into the dod/custom folder. Imported it into the game.

- No effect.

Placed the .vtf image into the dod/download/materials/vgui/logos folder. There was copies of the working .vtf in this file.

- No effect.

Placed the .vtf image into the dod/download/user_custom folder. This is where information about sprays you see is cached.

- No effect.

Checked the gameinfo.txt file for anything pertaining to sprays.

- Nothing found.

Became skeptical of the .vtf file themselves. Pulled up the original (working) .vtf file, along with the not working copy into VTFEdit.

Compared the variables and parameters of the two files, ensuring they were both using the same .vtf version and had the same customization settings.

-The spray does not work in our private server.

-- The spray does not work in our public server.

--- The spray does not work in another (non-1stMRB) server.

Decided to verify VTFEdit itself.

Checked the VTFEdit website for any recent updates.

- None available

Used a different tool to convert the .vtf image.

- No change.

Created new .jpg and .tfa images via paint.net and tested them in-game.

-The spray does not work in our private server.

-- The spray does not work in our public server.

--- The spray does not work in another (non-1stMRB) server.

Searching for an answer via google brought up similar topics on the Steam forum, however none lead to a resolution of the problem when I tested them.

Opened a steam support ticket. After two full weeks of waiting, got a response from a technician apologizing for wait times, and directed me to browse their forums for a solution. The technician then apparently forgot DOD:S was made by Valve, as he began to reference it as a 3rd party game.
