I'm trying to figure why the 大名 (daimyo) method, where you hold two chopstick sets without breaking either apart, is named so. First, the daimyo were territorial lords in Japan that held most of the respective power (via land ownership) between the 12th century and up until the unification of the Empire (1868). The first kanji in the word, dai 大, means large, while the second 名 (みょう or myo) when used in conjunction with dai means private land (it is short for myōden (名田)). However, 名 can also mean distinguished, noted, and is also the first kanji in the term for name, 名前 (なまえ, namae)

So I don't get it : (

Also, for the record, NEVER use the "international style". I know it is a joke, but in case anyone ever goes to Japan and remembers this video, DO NOT DO IT. It is considered extremely rude to stab at your food with the chopsticks. Just ask for silverware; almost every restaurant will have some.

Also, one more fun fact, it is considered rude to leave your chopsticks poked into your ramen bowl (or any bowl of food). Instead, you either lay them across the top, or on the table; never leave them in the food. It is rude, but also considered unlucky for not only you, but anyone else around you.

The Japanese take their food very seriously sometimes.
