I have a fairly new computer and I had the package that lasted one month to protect it from any virus. Now I am looking for a GOOD and inexpensive one that will protect my computer from virus that may be out there any ideas?

You may be more successful with this question by posting in the Medical Supply Office. It is for any and all technical questions or problems.

As for your question, much to my surprise (and initial scepticism), I have found Microsoft Security Essentials to be ideal for myself. Perhaps it will work well for you too.

You can inspect the program for yourself, and see if it is what you are looking for;

MSE is probably the best free application.

MalwareBytes is great too, if you get the paid version you get the real-time protection as well, but it will run you $25. It is a one time payment though, so I would say its worth it.

Agreed. Avast is a bit too resource intensive for me. MSE is very low resources and does a great job for being a free component. I put it on all my PC's and family pc's and I recommend it highly. DO NOT USE NORTON, OR MCAFEE!! Those are HORRIBLE. They slow your pc to a crawl and will do a lot of clogging up of the registry for no reason.

If you're looking to actively protect your PC I'd recommend actually buying an antivirus solution, as opposed to anything offered for free online. Free online tools such as malware bytes are great for cleaning out an infected machine but not so great for proactive protection.

I'd recommend Kaspersky antivirus if you consider yourself a more advanced user, otherwise Webroot is another great option. I use webroot on my own unit simply because it operates more in the background where as Kaspersky will ask you what you want it to do constantly. It's also a lot easier to turn webroot "off" when you want to play a game. It also provides very adequate protection online to prevent fishing, block harmful sites, etc.

Best rule of thumb about antivirus programs when it comes to free vs pay is this, subscription based service is always better. Big companies like Webroot, Kaspersky, etc they have paying customers which gives them the massive amounts of funds they need to stay better on top of emerging threats. Kaspersky for example is a great example because it's definitions are updating constantly.

I'd strongly recommend staying away from letting your PCs security hinge on any pre-installed/free microsoft utility. I find AVG to be about just as useless.

Just this geek's two cents
