Closed - Internet Connection Problems

Question

Posted (edited)

Name: Jeremy Johnson

Rank: Private

Type of issue: Wireless/Hardware (Connection to Internet)

Brief Description of Issue: Ok, so a few months ago I was experiencing internet connection issues in my old room, so I switched room hoping it would be better. I was better, I never lost connection again until my mom's boyfriend moved his computer desk that's upstairs. He didn't move it a lot though. The desk was in a corner of the living room and he literally just rotated it so it would be against the other wall. Why? I don't know, but yeah. I'm running wireless by the way & he's connected directly or whatever. So ever since he did that, I've been losing connection to the internet every here and there and it's FRUSTRATING!!! I told him many many maaaaany times to just put the desk back where it was, but he won't listen to me. He tells me that it's no a problem with the desk. Honestly, I think so. What do you think? Yesterday I got so frustrated that I wrote down what time did I lose the connection and what time I got it back. Oh, and when I lose it, I still have my 4-5 bars, it just has a yellow triangle with a "!" in the middle. When I click on network status, it says "No Internet Connection" (When I lose it). Could anyone tell me why?

Here is the stuff I wrote down:

- Lost at: 6:17pm EST - Got it back at: 6:21pm EST

- Lost at: 6:31pm EST - Got it back at: 6:32pm EST

- Lost at: 6:38pm EST - Got it back at: 6:38pm EST (about 30 seconds)

- Lost at: 8:15pm EST - Got it back at: 8:16pm EST

- Lost at: 8:29pm EST - Got it back at: 8:31pm EST

I know that some of those times are short, but sometimes it takes longer and it's frustrating!!! Especially when you're gaming! Nothing more frustrating than gaming out or doing some research or whatever and BOOM lose connection! It mostly happens during the day. At night, it's a bit better. I don't know why, but it's annoying. If anyone would have something, please help! Also, if there's some missing information, ask me in the reply and I'll answer. Thanks.

perhaps if he disconnected wires he did not plug them back in properly? DSL internet? Cable internet? Dial up?

Does it kick you off if your land line receives a phone call?

I'm thinking it could be a hardware issue. Is his desk in between where your wireless router is located in relation to your computer? (Please account for walla as well)

Additionally, please provide the Make/Model of your wireless router if possible

I would agree with McDowell, your issue does have some hallmarks of bad or failing hardware.

What construction is your moms bf's desk made of? If it's one of those cheaper ones with a lot of metal, it could easily be a culprit.

What I would have you try are as follows:

Have you already tried power cycling your router and modem? You would do this by unplugging both from the power outlets, leaving them unplugged for a few minutes, then reconnecting them.

Another possible fix is changing the channel on which your wireless network is operating on. you would do this by logging into your router and adjusting the channel it is broadcasting on. We can assist you with this better if you post the make and model of your router. Neighbors around you may have started setting up wireless networks, and when they are on the same channel they can cause interference. If you have an android phone you can download wifi analyzer and it will give you a graphic display of other networks operating around you and how close, etc.

This method has actually worked great for me when my wireless router was acting up for no reason. Upon investigation of the wireless networks around me I determined they're probably all on the same channel as mine. After changing the channel on which my router operated my connectivity issues were alleviated.

Hope this helps! Good hunting!

Gearhart: No it doesn't kick me off

Bradley: No, his is perfectly fine

McDowell: The wireless router is a Actiontec R1000H

Barney: The desk is made out of wood. We tried restarting the wireless router or whatever but nothing happened. I have A LOT of people with a lot of wireless internet or whatever, maybe what you're saying there is right? Because I lose internet connection on my PC, but on my iPod, my wifi is completely fine.

By the way, thanks guys for trying to help me. Much appreciated.

Edit: I have BELL FibreOP. If that helps you more?

You should try changing the channel / frequency your router is operating on.

click this link to see how to log into your router

That's assuming you have the router BELL FibreOP gave you. There should be an option to change the channel your router is operating on. You can take screen shots and post them if you need to so we can help walk you though them.

Also check this link from BELL FibreOP's website: here that will provide additional trouble shooting tips for interference you may be encountering.

UPDATE: We moved the desk back a bit and I went from 5.5mbps to 130mpbs (i don't know if this has to do with internet connection or not, but it's better) We don't really like where the desk is so Friday we're gonna move it somewhere else and see if I can have the same internet connection!

It still might be a good idea to change the frequency of your network

+1

However make sure you are changing the channel it is operating on, not the frequency. As the frequency is what determines G, or N bands.

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wifihom...wifichannel.htm

That link is a somewhat detailed how-to about changing your channel for your routers broadcasting

FYI you should only every operate a wireless network on channel 1, 6, or 11. Other channels overlap with each other and cause extra interference.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2.4_GHz_...11b,g_WLAN).svg

You can use netstumbler to survey the other wireless networks near you and choose the channel that has the least interference. (count any networks on ch 1-5 against channel 1, 2-10 against channel 6 and 7-11 against channel 11)

This changing the channel thing is confusing me sooo much.. Ahaha, but right now it's working, so I won't mess with it until Friday, when we move everything again.

hey man I'll be around all day on Friday, so if you want to do it then we can both hop on vent and I can walk you through doing it over vent :) Just hit me up on steam chat, I'll be sure to leave my mobile app logged in on my phone so you can reach me!

Still having problems, but you can close this. I'll just post another post if it doesn't get better. The way Bell did it is that we have a router upstairs where the computer of my moms bf is, and then there's a room where the electrical panel thing, they put another router there. We're gonna try to put an ethernet cable from that router to my computer. See if that works. If that doesn't work, I'll just try different stuff. If those stuff don't work, I'll make a new post. Thanks though!

Be sure not to run the ethernet cable too close to any existing electrical. This is liable to cause interference in your signal.

Please, keep us posted. We will do our best to assist you in any way we can. If there are any further questions, do not hesitate to ask them.
