Question

Name: P. Pandalsson

Rank: MSgt.

Type of issue: Hardware

Brief Description of Issue:

Cannot seem to find any reference to my issue.

I booted the computer tonight and had a green screen of death. Replugged my monitor cable and rebooted and accidentally pressed 2 instead of 1 when asked to boot in setup mode or in default mode.

After rebooting in default, I was told that changes were made and that it had to reboot. When rebooting, I left and came back only to find my screensaver on and could not wake my PC. So I pressed to restart button and that's when this happened:

I got no POST and heard this sequence of beeps - short [pause] short [pause] short [pause] short-short

What I've tried so far:

-Reseating all RAM (seems fine since the beep sequence is totally different when i removed all RAM to see what it did)

-Reseating my GFX card

-Removed my sound card (using onboard right now)

Each time I got the same beep sequence as the first.

My PC specs:

P5Q Deluxe mobo

Intel3(?) Dual Core something something

2 Gig RAM (Corsair XM2 DDR2)

Would appreciate any help on this since I couldn't find a single reference for the beep sequence in AMI Bios beep codes.

Thanks.

As a starter, check the manual for your motherboard for the corresponding beep codes.

For the motherboard you listed, the following should be accurate, but it never hurts to be doubly sure;

Memory issue: 1 long, 2 short

Graphics card issue: 1 long, 3 short

CPU issue: 5 short

Please verify the series of beeps, and post back here.

Yep, all the fans are working although my GFX card fan only starts spinning after the beeps have started. However, I haven't tried reseating my CPU yet. Will try it and see if it does anything.

I have also tried clearing my CMOS by the jumper method and the battery removal method with no change after either.

While I'm thinking it could just be that my GFX card is fried, the beep sequence when I remove my GFX card is very different from the one I'm getting when it's in the slot.

Does your motherboard have integrated graphics?

No, just integrated sound.

Then I wouldn't point to your graphics card just yet. If you do not have integrated graphics, and you remove the graphics card, it should give you the corresponding beep code.

We should start with your CPU, as that seems to be what the first beep code was referring to.

Inspect your CPU and CPU socket for any visible damages. If not, reseat the CPU.

Inspect all caballing inside your case to ensure it is all secure. Specifically, power cables.

If possible, you may want to test with a different CPU entirely. This should tell us whether or not it is the CPU, CPU socket.

hey all,

So I've pretty much tried all the stuff I could find online:

- reseating cards, RAM, reslotting RAM, resetting BIOS, testing beeps for different cases, etc.

So far, the only thing I haven't had the chance to try is reseating the CPU (although since I didn't touch the case so that's why I haven't checked tyet).

As mentioned previously, I've gotten different beep sequences for RAM/without RAM, with/without graphics card, and none of it points to the

beep/pause/beep/pause/beep/pause/double beep sequence. The closest I was able to find was beep/pause/beep/pause/double beep for a memory issue. But since it's only 2 beeps and pauses before the double, it didn't match.

So, I've pretty much packed up the computer and will get back to you guys when I've settled in St. John's (which should be next week Monday). In the meantime if you guys find anything through your "secret sources" let me know :)

Thanks so far, will keep you posted on my end.

Cheers,

Panda

unplug _everything_ except a piece of ram, the cpu, and the graphics card. (and the power cord). no sata, no keyboard/mouse. the computer is obviously useless with no monitor or controls, but you can rule out more parts that way.

Hi guys,

So finally got some time to check the computer again.

So I tried both Lafy's suggestion and reseating the CPU. The CPU looks fine as does the MOBO in terms of connections.

Still the same problem.

When I remove the ram I get the appropriate ram missing beep message. When I remove the GFX card I get the GFX missing error beeps.

When I turn the computer on, the GFX card fan turns on (as with all other fans). Is it possible for the GFX card fan to work but the GFX card to be chips to be burnt?

Can the lack of post be related to HDD no longer functioning?

I didn't really have too many spare pieces to try swapping out/in hardware and even less now that after the move.

Right now, I'm just thinking of rebuilding the computer altogether. :(

You don't need a hard drive to post. Can you inspect the capacitors on your motherboard? The tops should be flat, not bulging at all, and should not show any signs of leaking fluids.

Here's some pictures of bad capacitors.

Do you have access to a multimeter? If so, you could test your power supply to make sure that it is functioning properly. Here's some instructions.

Only attempt this if you're comfortable doing it.

Forget the caps, i just checked, you have a different kind that aren't prone to leaking. I'd still be curious about your power supply voltages if you're able to check.

Do you have another computer or a friends computer that you can test your graphics card in? The graphics card may have went out, considering the original problem seemed video related. You might also consider rebooting to your windows disk, you can set your BIOS to boot to disk first. Then try repairing or reinstalling windows.

With the AMI BIOS I found the following regarding the beeps

4 short beeps System timer failure The system clock/timer IC has failed or there is a memory error in the first bank of memory

5 short beeps Processor error The system CPU has failed

So I hope this narrows down the issue.

What is the situation with this issue? Has it since been resolved?

Any further information about the issue, or information pertaining to what you have already attempted would be helpful.

Sadly, I was able to try again when I moved-in and it still had the same issue. I've:

Reset CPU

Reset MoBo

Taken everything apart and "re-built" my computer

Still got the short-short-short-double beep sequence.

I figure that at this point, the next step is either to get myself a new GFX card (the only thing I haven't tried at this point) or to simply just get a new comp altogether.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions and brain-wracking (if any) on trying to resolve this situation. I'll write it up as one of those "wtf Bill Gates" moments.

Please close this ticket as unresolved.

Have you tried contacting Asus?

https://secure.livechatinc.com/licence/1792...at.cgi?groups=0

That's a live chat where you can try to get motherboard support during business hours. If your motherboard is out of warranty you might want to lie to them about the purchase date to make sure they don't refuse to troubleshoot the problem. I doubt they'll be much help, but maybe they'll know what the beep sequence means.
