Resolved - Steam - Offline Mode - Any Ideas?

Question

Posted (edited)

Name: William Wanner

Rank: Private First Class

Type of issue: Steam

Brief Description of Issue:

Hey guys,

Last night I was having problems having my steam go "online". Clearly I have internet, and Steam is up and running. I'm trying to figure out why it doesn't go online. When I click the "Go Online" option on the Steam tab it says it will restart Steam and go online. But when it restarts it's still in offline mode.

So not only can I not see my Steam friend list, but I also can't see the servers to go in game whenever I try to play.

I'd rather not completely uninstall/re-install Steam..

Any Ideas?

hey man,

I have the same problem from time to time.

What I do is I exit steam so that I am actually offline and I relog back in.

after that it just works normal again.

Hope it helps.

greetings,

Note; The following steps will require you to log into your Steam account. If you do not currently remember your Steam login and password, take the necessary steps to recover them prior to completing the following.

Close Steam completely. You may need to check the task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to be sure Steam has closed fully.

Navigate to your steam installation folder (example; C:\Program files\Steam).

Delete everything in that location EXCEPT for the following;

Steam.exe

SteamApps folder

Restart Steam. This step may take a few minutes, as Steam will redownload it's core files.

You will not have to redownload any games.

If there are any questions, or further problems, please post them here.

Did exactly what you said Holland. Steam updated and i verified Steam user from my computer, im still waiting on Steam to connect. When i click on the box saying Steam is connecting it says program is not responding and gives me the option to close it or wait till it responds...

Tried both methods, none seems to have a better path. Been waiting for a half hour just for steam to connect.

Make sure you are searching in the "internet" tab in the server browser. Also be sure you do not currently have anything in the filter box.

Make sure Steam is running with administrative privileges.

Put an exception into your firewall for Steam.exe and hl2.exe

I have all those setting correct, it seems that servers are not responding... I found a few more but whenever i click on a server to try and at least play the game the servers do not respond. Also still can't get our pub server or private in my favorites to show up! :(

Try rebooting your router.

Unplug the power cord from your router, wait approximately 30 seconds, and plug it back in. It may take a few minutes after plugging it in for it to connect.

When you open DOD:S and click the "find a server" button, it should automatically start updating the server list. If this is the case, do not press anything. Allow it to update fully on it's own. If it has successfully found active servers, press the "quick refresh" button. Allow it to finish the refresh completely before doing anything else. From there, try connecting to our server using the IP directly. The address for our public server is; 208.167.243.207:27015

I suspect that refreshing the server list is overwhelming your router, causing it to freeze up (resulting in the servers appearing to be unresponsive). Try to limit the number of programs using a connection to the internet (close any browsers, skype, IM programs, etc). If limiting the connections to your router, and doing the other steps stated above works, than you should look into purchasing a new router.
