Question

Posted (edited)

Name: Casper Wilson

Rank: Private First Class

Type of issue: I have no idea

Brief Description of Issue: Well this issue has been going on for about a week now. When I play on our server at noon or in the afternoon my ping is about 100 which is normal. Then in the evening/night my ping is skyhigh about 180. It has become an issue for me over the past week or so. 10 mins ago I joined our server and it was 185 and shortly after I joined the 505th server and it was normal about 130. It seems to be our server only and only at night. I have called my internet provider, switched between wireless and standart cable and nothing has seemed to work out. I hope someone knows more about this than me.

Thanks in advance!

My ping was "okay" for a couple of days. Still a little high sometimes though. Yesterday the ping problem came back (around 170-175)

And I talked to my internet "man" - and he said he couldn't see anything wrong and he also tested it from top to toe without finding anything.

Willow was having a similar issue today specifically with our server when she was connecting while others were just fine. It definitely seems to be an ISP problem and the way they route traffic to the server. Short of changing your providers I don't think that there is anything we can do honestly :(

The only other thing is that someone from the command staff could open an issue with the server host to have them check. The reality is though that since the majority of users are connecting just fine to the server the hosting provider will likely not find anything. Even if it is a small chance though it may be worth it for someone to open a ticket just to double check everything since we have a couple of team members having this issue.

I've been having a similar problem the past week or two, hence my original posty thing asking about the tracert. I wanted to compare our routes and see if I could see a common detonator. I did not, but I had a technician come out the other day after wind blew a power pole down (it landed about 20ft from my bedroom) and they said I was getting significant loss on a lower frequency. He went on to explain all about frequencies to me, which I have now forgotten because I drank wine. In conclusion, I have nothing new to add other than multiple people are experiencing a problem like this.

Sorry Wilson, unless we can get one of command staff to open a message with the server host I think we have exhausted our options here.

If one of the server admins sees this post and has the ability to open a message for us, please let us know either way if a message with the provider can be opened on our behalf.

Otherwise Wilson I think this specific issue should be closed and if we find anything new we can open it again later.

Thanks,

Heresy

Closing the ticket. Sorry we couldn't be of more assistance to you, unfortunately it is a variable set in the maps themselves, which we can't change without editing the map itself.

Feel free to post any other problems or questions you may have in the MSO.

Edit; Derp, ignore this post.

My apologies for the above. That`s what you get from me in the mornings I guess.

I`m not entirely sure it is the server. Tracerts from other clients appear normal, and pings are normal, or even better than normal for myself at least.

The next best suggestion I can give you is to try to replace your router altogether and see if that improves the situation any. I may have missed something, but if your ISP isn`t reported any issues with their network, the problem might be at your end.

Now that I'm home, I've looked into your problem a little further. According to the tracerts you posted, the problem doesn't lie with our server (it's reporting the average ping you have stated). It also doesn't appear to be lying in your end either, the rates look pretty good in the first picture.

In the picture you posted where the rates were higher, connections hit a slow point between a router in Germany (gtt-gw.ip4.tinet.net), and another in Virginia (as20473.ae2.ar2.ewr1.us.nlayer.net). Both of which appear to be an IXP (Internet Exchange Point), which neither us, nor your ISP have any control over.

I wish I could offer you a good reason as to why the connection slows there, but sadly, I don't have too many. The best I can offer you, is that there is a lot of traffic passing between those two points, or perhaps a hardware failure somewhere along there. In addition, it would help to explain why some people are having connection issues and others are not.

There isn't any way to change the route your connection takes yourself, that comes down to your ISP. And there's about a snowballs chance in hell that they will change it for a single customer.

If my investigation is correct, the only option you would have is to change ISP's, and hope they route traffic differently. Or, wait it out, and the problem should "fix itself" with time.
