Resolved - Router/Modem..answers wanted ASAP thanks:)

Brief Description of Issue: Whenever someone watches netflix in my house my ping goes up to 150 when its normally around 20. The modem that we have is probably close 9 years old. We have DSL internet so we have modem and we have router.

The Modem is a SpeedStream 5200 and the Router is a Netgear N600 wireless duel band router model WNDR3400...whenever i go to download something say off steam the max download speed i get is like 370 kb/s

I am not sure if that is because of our isp or because of our old router and modem...I'm not sure if i am missing a lot of details in this post but i would like to go look at options tomorrow and would like some input before i go purchase something that i didnt need in the first place jus to have it be the isp or whatever. thanks!

It could be either your modem/router or ISP, or maybe even both.

A router/modem coming up on 9 years old could never hurt to be replaced. Newer routers will be able to handle traffic more efficiently. That being said, make sure the modem/router aren't covered by your ISP for replacement (if it is equipment they installed).

When your network is under heavy use (netflix streaming movies, amplified if streaming to multiple devices for example) will cause your ping to increase. A newer router may be more responsive, lessening the effect to an extent.

As for download speeds, you should expect them to be slower while other people are using the network. When others are streaming videos, for example, you aren't able to use 100% of the network bandwidth, as some of it is being used. Thus the speed at which you download will be slower.

Look into what service plan you have with your ISP to see what kind of rates you are paying for. Run a speed test, connecting to a server located near where you live. This will help determine if you are receiving the service you are paying for. If it isn't adding up, contact your ISP and ask some questions. See why you aren't getting what you were told you should get.

Here are a few suggestions and questions. Just thought I would put it all in a list format so it would be easier to read and respond.

  • Confirm the top download and upload speeds using speed.net as Holland suggested
  • Verify what your download and upload speeds are supposed to be (may require a call/chat with Internet provider)
  • Is your modem owned by you or is it leased? If it is leased then you should be able to get a new modem regardless.
  • Are all your connections wireless? Do you still see the same ping issue when you are directly connected to the router via a network cable?
  • Have you had Netflix for a while and this issue just started to occur?
  • Have you tried turning off the HD option in Netflix to see if there is any change in how it affects pings?
  • There are QoS (Quality of Service) options that you can set on this Netgear router. You can use this to help limit the amount of bandwidth that Netflix (which is buffered) uses versus you other priority traffic like games (needs to be real time). You can read more about this on page 105 in the manual at this link.

Gearhart and I troubleshooted this for a while last night. The key thing seems to be that is bandwidth is just not being provided to him. Gearhart is going to check with his Internet provider to confirm what speed he should be seeing (possibly 6 Mbit/s down) and see if there is something wrong with his modem or the line. We also turned on QoS on the router for DOD:S but this did not help.

One thing I thought of Gearhart to eliminate your router is to temporarily plug your system directly into the DSL modem. Please make sure you have a firewall turned on though on your system since you will be publicly exposed when you connect directly like this.

The HD setting for Netflix is 3GB/hr, which works out to 6.83mbps down. It's no wonder that would max out your internet connection. You really only have two options for fixing the problem. Don't watch HD Netflix or get more bandwidth.
