Ping Issues on the Pub

A. Cannon 1st MRB

Question

I Have merged this post with a post from Pfc. McGarr and pinned them here to collect tracerts from everyone having the same issues on the pub with ping and lag. To post a tracert follow this procedure:

If anyone else is experiencing this issue, please post a tracert from when you're experiencing latency on the public server. (Open start, type "cmd" and enter "tracert 208.167.243.207")

Or use the PingPlotter Brown has mentioned and run it in the background.

Name: Alec Cannon

Rank: Gunnery Sergeant

Type of issue: (Not sure)

Brief Description of Issue: Every time I join the 1st MRB server my ping goes out of control going up to the 800. It seems it only touches the 1st MRB public server because I can play in a majority of other servers without having ping issues.

Since i m on right now i m having ping problems. It is jumping from 90 to 200 in 2 sec and back. It is not me router software is uptodate and internet conection says it is strong. Checked my ping via a ping checker sad i had 9-12 pings per sec thats kind of fast compared to what i used to have.

Traceroutes are very useful. If I get enough users with issues and proper traceroutes during the ping spikes, I can report it to Gameservers and have them optimize some pipes for us.

Awesome! We will get right on it. I assume you want the basic travert in cmd program?

Sorry For the late reply.

Yes, I am still suffering from latency issues when I am in the Pub Server. I have checked and re-checked all possible problems it could have been on my side. When I connect to servers for cs source, cs, DOD:source and other online pc games, I have 0 lagg and no problems at all. It seems to be issues solely with the PUB.

All the best,

Mike

Having spoken to Mc Garr a few times about this, He informed me that his ping will be normal over the night when hes on from about 9 PM est > 9 AM EST And then all throughout the day when he joins the server he'll stay at 900+ and bounce around within that area for about 5 - 6 minutes before it calms down but that never lasts. However It skyrockets and prevents him from playing,

Ping varies within I guess the peak hours of the server where the pub is hosted. My latency is usually around 18 to 30 on average throughout dod and other games being hosted by servers on the east coast. It will commence around 9am and stop as late as 9pm. I have windows during the day where it goes back to normal but it is sporadic and I can not give and specific times as to when the lagg spikes start...All I know is that it does a Lightyear jump from 30 to 999 ping within a few seconds.

Copying this from Cannon's thread; I recommend anyone experiencing ping issues to try this and post the results.

PingPlotter

IDROvmI.png

It is essentially tracert with a bunch of information gathered over a period of time. Look at the Avg #'s (average ping response...the one after is Current ping response) on each line of information. Most are in the 20-30s, which is normal. The moment it gets to hop 14 (the same place that Cannon's starts fucking up, where it gets to choopa's servers), it jumps to almost 100.

This tells me it isn't my ISP or any of the connections to the server, but the server host itself. There is no actual loss (the first set of digits next to the Hop number; you can see when my modem goes down, it has loss of course...it went down a few times today, it stays there for duration of the plotted set), so it isn't that kind of issue. Nothing gets shut down. Shit just gets throttled. I'm not sure what could cause this.

I'd LOVE to see if anyone's who's looks similar so please download this shit and try it out for me for a couple hours during peak traffic time (daytime) please! Take a screenshot of the picture like I've done here and post it for us to witness.

I highly recommend this program for anyone experiencing any sort of issues with their internet. Link. It's free for 30 days, $40 after that (or $200 for the pro, which has more network features and isn't really necessary for residential needs), but after 30 days, if you just click "register later" you can keep using it indefinitely for free. You can change the intervals/duration of the ping, the IP, all sorts of configs to suit your needs. Leave it running for a day and you'll see exactly where the problems arise and whether or not you can actually fix it without ISP or further help.

So I have been noticing higher than usual "randomness" in registry etc on the server, been making me whinge about it. Finally got round to running pingplotter. I get a sea of red!

The 1st attached image is early in the day (UK) server pretty empty so pretty low load everywhere I guess, and its not too bad. Second image was 7pm UK time on full server, loads of packet loss etc, I assume there is not a huge amount I can do about this? There is some loss on the 1st hope so going to see if there is a firmware update for my cable router but the biggest issue is the choopa hop. (traceplotting other places such as google.com gave the expected result of very low ping and no loss) edit: 7:30 for half an hour server is full but I'm not playing - 4th image - consistent 80% packet loss on hop 9 :s note 2.5s trace interval vs 1s for earlier images.

I'm on a Virgin Media 120Mb/s connection (3rd image) so bandwidth should definitely not be a problem.

Cheers,

Williams
