Type of issue: Not sure

Brief Description of Issue: Since Saturday, when i click to play Rust, my PC crashes (black screen then restarts). I have verified game cache, uninstalled and reinstalled, checked that drivers were up to date. Eventually after an hour or two it will start working. I have no idea what i'm doing to suddenly get it working either. Also, it is only Rust that this is happening.

AMD Phenom™ II X6 1090T 6 Core processor 3.20 GHz

16 GB RAM

2 AMD Radeon HD 5770 1G, Crossfired

Corsair TX650 watt

No changes that i can think of. I just recently started replaying Rust. Played just fine for about a week, then Saturday morning kept crashing. Sunday was fine to play. Then Monday morning again crashed. ATM i still haven't been about to get it working. I've also reinstalled the drivers today, still no luck.

If it's just Rust. It might be worth trying some Game Launch Options:

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article...=1040-JWMT-2947

Maybe -autoconfig to start, Steam could be remembering past configs for Rust that don't necessarily work with the new rendition.

Okay so i just did the -autoconfig and it seems to have worked! I'll keep you posted if any more problems arise. Thank you so much!

Yama swoops in with the save!

I'm surprised -autoconfig worked. I know it used to be GoldSource, but they ported it to Unity.

I'll keep this open for 48 hours before closing it as resolved.

Does autoconfig change the graphics quality settings? If so, I have a hunch as to what the issue may be...

Does your computer simply power off, as if there was a power failure?

In the event your computer is powering off, as stated above (like it would from a power failure), I would suspect your power supply is not adequate to supply the components of your computer. When you start the game (which is quite graphically and process intensive), your GPU and possibly CPU may be attempting to draw additional power from the power supply which it may not be capable of supplying, resulting in the computer powering off.

I have not looked into what a system like yours would require for a power supply, as I'm short on time to research right now, though as I stated, it's a hunch based on previous experience, and something worth looking into.

Hmm okay so Rust did an update and now it's crashing again. I checked and the autoconfig is still set in launch options. But Holland I think the answer to your question is yes. It black screens, immediately does the restart, and asks if i want to start in normal or safe mode.

I entered your specs into this power supply calculator. I filled in the blanks as best I could, favouring more intensive components, and it came around 450W at 90% load. How accurate the calculator is I don't know. Do you experience a similar issue with any other games which are graphically intensive?

So far, the only game i'm having this issue with is Rust.

Also just thought i'd mention that my reboot time is really long. Which i didn't realize until Kirkendall and Parker pointed it out. Kirk said i may need a new hard drive.

Just as a secondary source, on pcpartpicker those components plus a little for other things like hard drives, fans, etc. results in ~400W TDP.

The Corsair TX650 is 82% minimum efficiency, so even at a worst case of 533W there should be plenty of power in the system for both calculations.

However, if you want to be sure that it isn't a power draw issue, you could try removing one of the HD 5770s and see if it still crashes.

Would you be opposed to trying a System Restore to a checkpoint sometime last week or earlier? You would have to reinstall any new programs or updates that you installed since then.

It won't be a hard drive. Hard drive failures will result in errors/blue screens, but never the PC simply shutting off. You can run a CHKDSK on the drive to determine bad sectors, but it isn't likely the reason for long system startup times by itself either.

According to the others, your power supply should be plenty powerful enough for your system. Regardless, it is the only hardware issue which would result in your computer crashing when put under load without an error. Pretty well everything else (hard drive, memory, processor, capacitors, etc.) would throw an error upon crash.

Only 2 things I remember causing a computer to restart like that. Either a power drain, not enough power, or the wrong type of memory. My son had memory in his computer when he bought it that was listed as Double Density, Double Sided, but all the chips were on one side. it was NOT double sided. It caused his computer to restart a lot, especially when more ram was needed to run Ram intense operations. it turned out it was ram for a server, not a regular PC. we replaced the ram and everything worked fine. If your system is drawing more power for Rust, then it could be a bigger PS is needed. I don't think that a 650 watt power supply would have a problem handling this set up, unless you added HD's and drives to it after purchase, or added the Crossfire after also. Will have to do a little more research.

I would be willing to try this but someone would have to walk me step by step thru the process. (i'm noob!) I won't be able to do this until Monday though.

Okay so new development over the weekend, i still occasionally get the PC crash but most often i can get to the rust servers screen. The issue now is after clicking join server and waiting 3-5 min while loading, it lags/freezes and i get a message saying display driver has stopped working but recovered successfully. I know the drivers are up to date, i JUST reinstalled them.

Forget the System Restore for now. What you just described is a little piece of windows tech known as Windows Timeout Detection and Recovery. Basically, if the graphics card hangs for more than 2 seconds, it will restart the driver (which in most cases will crash the game).

Some Common Causes:

  • Overheating
  • Dying Card
  • Bad Drivers

Let's look at overheating first, since it can also be a cause for the other crashes that result in a restart. Has it been a while since you last dusted the inside of your PC? If so, try cleaning it and see if that alleviates the issue.

If it was graphic cards overheating, you would just lose graphics, not have the computer restart. if the Processor was overheating, it would shut down or burn out, depending on if it had the overheating protection or not. AMD vs. Intel. Any info you can supply on the system will help in determining if it is a hardware problem and help to narrow it down. make and model of Motherboard, Graphic cards, HD's, Drives, memory and any other cards added. if it is a Store bought system just give me the make and model number of that and anything you added after you bought it. if it is a custom built, will need the info on what was in it when it was ordered and anything you changed afterwards.

I figured if it was dusty enough to suffocate the GPU, it is probably dusty enough in there to suffocate the CPU as well. All a moot point though if her computer isn't overly dusty. I just went with the cheapest and easiest troubleshooting first.

Click start, All programs, Accessories, System tools, System information. Hopefully it is listed there. It would be easier if your ex kept the paperwork on what he bought and put into the system. being almost 6 years old, I don't think its the wrong memory. it probably would have shown up before now. Its possible some parts of the ram is going bad, but it will tell you how much you have and whats available in System info also. The most probable culprit, if it is hardware, is the PS is breaking down or being overloaded. The Dual graphics cards you use, they require a 600 watt Power Supply for the Crossfire configuration. you have a 650 watt. if other drives were added, like you have 2 or more Hard Drives and 2 CD Roms drives, it may be overloading it so it restarts when the graphics get to intense. How many hard Drives and CD Rom Drives do you have. Is the sound built into the Motherboard or was it a separate card too? Wish you were close by. I could just drive over and check myself.

Not sure how graphic intense Rust is. I don't play the game. Do you play other games and are they graphic intense? Like maybe Skyrim? if you want to catch me on vent we can talk and I can walk you through where to go on your computer to get the additional info I may need and what to check.

kk so i didn't see it in that list that hill suggested but i found a pic of when it was being built. Motherboard box says ASUS M4A79XTD. Does this help? There is only 1 CD ROM drive, 1 hard drive (western digital caviar black 1.0TB), and no added sound card (must be a built in one).
