Brief Description of Issue:

In the eve of my birthday, I would like to finally buy a computer. I just have no idea how to spec it. Price range is $1000-1500, but I would of course love to keep it less than $1250 lets say. I have a friend who is good with computers and building them so I would like to build this one for optimal performance. Anyone have any decent builds or tips? If possible it would be great if I could order all the parts at once like on newegg but I am open to anything! Thanks guys.

This is a good start. It was originally $340 and its $289 "In Cart" I think they are having a 70% off on other things this weekend. I am a fan of Intel processors and MoBo's. You don not necessarily need to go Core i7 when i5's will do the trick. At least 8GB of ram. Onboard soundcards have got pretty good so you don't need to buy another one. I chose a solid state for my C Drive and a 7200 RPM sata for my games drive. Just some things I did in general, I am sure people will set you up some builds, the only thing I would say is do not skimp on the basics...Processor, MoBo, memory and especially video card. My two cents.

Is it possible for you to get a student discounted Windows 7 (or Windows 10)?

How can I know if I am eligible for the discount?

Sometimes you can get a hookup through school, sometimes you can get a hookup through their website. It's been a while since I've gone that route, so I would have to do some research.

This is something I built on the fly that even I would be proud using. It would stand up proud for the next couple of years.

You said you had someone who would help you build it correct? If so, then I'd make another one that wouldn't use a online pc building company.

Also you have a monitor/headset/mic/mouse/keyboard yes? If you have all that already then that's alot of stuff you can cut off the list.

I ended up buying a cheap Cyberpower PC with an AMD six core FX-6300 on clearance at tigerdirect.com. I upgraded the power supply, graphics card ( MSI AMD Raedon r9 380 4GB), and upgraded my ram to (16 GB Gskill Ripjaws). Total around 800 dollars. All I needed was a monitor which i picked up an Acer around 100 dollars. If you choose not to build one then this is a good choice. This build runs literally everything I have. Woz's build is a monster though. I'm thinking I should just build one like that for fun lol

Intel's are good but overpriced for a strict gaming use.

I made a build that should work with a 1500 dollar budget. I tried to cut a ton of price corners to get it down but with what you need to play, this is what I had to end up with. Most times nowdays a computer than can run modern games decently are going to cost ballpark 1500 dollars.

Give it a look, and yes I know the monitor is expensive as all hell but G-Sync is so worth it.

Intel's are good but overpriced for a strict gaming use.

Intel's are pricier, but AMD tries to compete in raw scores by throwing more physical cores at lower speeds at the problem. If every game was optimized perfectly to run on multiple slower cores as well as it does on fewer faster cores, I would go AMD every time, but as far as gaming goes, single core performance takes a front seat.

I had no idea that the 390 was that cheap now. Definitely go with that over the 970. The only negative is that it uses slightly more power under full load.

I had never seen that EVGA PSU before, but after some research it looks like a really solid pick. Especially at that price. I'd pick it over the Corsair 750 I had in my build.

It looks like your friend pulled the CD/DVD Drive out of the build. Are you okay with installing the OS via a flash drive?

As far as upgrading to i7, the e3-1231 is basically and i7 without integrated graphics, so I'd still go with it.

I see that he chose DDR4 over DDR3. It basically trades extra RAM for faster RAM. In my experience though, RAM speed is never the bottleneck, so I think it would be more valuable to have the 16GB @ 1866 than the 8GB @ 4000. I'll let you decide though, since it is basically a compromise decision.

I have an idea now, I'll be able to buy the computer later so I will just come back to it or something. You can close it for now ;)
