This is crazy. Being forced to take off a shirt with an American Flag because its a Mexican Holiday. Thats is utter BULL CRAP. I hope that Vice Principle gets fired. I really do. The irony is that if they had been burning the flag and the guy stopped them the ACLU would have already pressed charges and started suing. Makes me sick.

It kinda sounded like the school had planned a Mexican-American appreciation sort of thing and I'm kind of getting the feeling that these kids were troublemakers and intended to cause something by wearing the shirts. Sure that doesn't exactly permit the school to tell them to flip their shirts or send them home, there's always going to be kids like that.

However, if they wore their shirts just because they want to, not intending to start a problem, then more power to them.

yeah I have to agree with Yama a little bit. If they did it to be resentful to the cultural awareness of the school then that's kind of wrong; however, with cultural awareness that means that the playing field has to be even for everyone. So if the hispanics are allowed to wear their nationality colors, Mexico in this case, then the American students should be equally able to represent their culture on that day. The families may press charges against the school for this and it's my guess that not the ACLU will represent them, but the ACLJ. They're like the counter argument to the ACLU. lol It should be interesting to see how this plays out. If this does go deep in the courts system then you can probably see the Principle and/or Vice Principle be reprimanded for it. If I was a parent of one of the children that went home, then I know I would organize a lawsuit.

The only problem with the whole "cultural awareness" angle...let me put it like this: Cinco De Mayo is not an American holiday. It is a Mexican holiday celebrating a victory in battle over the French in 1862. So to understand why I think what happened is so ludicrous, let's look at the issue from the other side. Let's say it's the Fourth of July. We're at a school in Mexico. They decide to celebrate the Fourth of July at this school, so maybe some exchange students living in Mexico wear their American flag shirts to celebrate. Then you get some Mexican kids that come to school wearing mexican flag shirts. In Mexico. And the school tells the kids wearing the mexican flag shirts to turn their shirts inside out or go home. Does that really make sense to anyone?

oh no man I agree with you. I just like to kinda play an angle to both sides and try to analyze what each side thinks. IMO there should be no public celebration of Cinco De Mayo since it is a Mexican holiday. If some Mexicans want to celebrate on their own time that's fine but there should be nothing public for it. It is America here. I would like to see the VP be fired for his actions, but hey that's just my opinion.
