Okay, so my dad is getting on my back about getting a job.

I've only worked once before.

And I want to find a good job that pays a little more than minimum wage.

Any General Ideas??

Whats your work experience? And what are you willing to do for a job?

You can make good money being a server; you have to be able to prioritize, multitask, upsell/persuade and have effective interpersonal skills to land some good tips at a decent place (show that cleavage hint hint). Although these skills are pretty standard for most jobs.

I'm sure many of us have stories from retail, if you go that route I suggest not working at a place you can't relate to. I had a great time working at Dicks Sporting Goods...not such a great job at CVS pharmacy. I know Engle and Ford both work in retail, I suggest not asking Ford haha but Engle works in sporting goods retail and he'll probably have some good info for you as well. I can't promise you won't start at min. wage though...

My best suggestion for any person with little to no experience is retail. Try to get a job via someone you know as well; most jobs obtained are through who you know, not what you can do.

Personally..I think you should just go into construction *growls*

In this economy, I don't think being too picky is an option - at least not for me.

I've been out of work for too long - I'd take anything that pays decent.

That said,

What do you WANT to do? What do you ENJOY doing?

Are you looking for a career or just 'pocket change' to pay a few bills & such?

Not young enough for what you had in mind. Click on his profile lol

Trufax.

Worsham, just do something you enjoy brutha.

You like cars? Go work at a car dealership parking/driving cars.

You into food? Go work at a grocery store and 'accidentally' cut into a box of your favorite food so you can eat it! Or work as a cook somewhere and get some experience as a chef!

You into art? Find an art gallery or something, work as a secretary or whatever.

At your age you're probably not thinking 'career' just yet, so do something that is in line with something you enjoy.

You into fitness? Go work at a plumbing company. I did that for a while right out of college - and I was the grunt labor guy. It was insanely tough work, but I loved it. Nothing better than working hard and feeling good about what you've accomplished at the end of the day. It was a shitty (pun intended) job, but it was a good honest paycheck.

Goodwin's trying to tell you that he stripped for a living. Still a good workout.

Thanks for all your input everyone.

I'm 18, I have a year of highschool left. And my dad wants mr to get a job.

I'm good with computers.

I don't want to work behind a mcdonalds food counter.

I've applied to all sports stores around.

Dicks, Rally house Texas, sports authority, play it again sports, Cardinal sports center, the movie theatre, home depot, ice cream places, I'm running out of options. I've applied to just about all retail stores within 10 miles that intrest me.

My dad is restricting me from the comp until I find a job. I'm not allowed to come home until dinner time. During that time I should be looking for a job.

I'm telling you, that hardhat/toolbelt combo is where its at. Be a man already :P

WHOA WHOA STOP TELLING THEM MY STRIPPER OUTFIT!

But honestly, it really depends, get a job you like and love to do. I was lucky enough to be working on cars at the age of 16 for my fathers' friend's carshop so yeah, pretty much find a job you love and enjoy to do.

lol at this point i think you should just get a job...worry about liking it later. Once you have a job, it'll probably be easier to make some lateral switches to a different dept or something.

And don't forget to dress well! In person applications are always better and have a few resumes handy..you never know when you'll have an on-the-spot interview. If you need more help with this, i'm sure we could give you some more pointers.

GOOD LUCK!! <3 you can do it!!!

I have had a few jobs that I would not want to experience again, but when i was like 16 17 I was not too picky as long as I got paid. Since I have been 18 I have been working at a Gander Mountain and it is awesome. I will say one thing about certain sporting goods stores is that when they look at employees for anything other than a cashier job they want someone with hands on experience. So if making money is all you care about then you cant be really picky, but if you are looking for some place where you think you will be for more than a few months then I would choose a little bit more carefully.

I know it can't help you now but if you go to college try to apply to be an Resident Assistant. They at least pay for your room and Where I go you get a semester stipend of 2500 paid bi-weekly. For a total of a little over 4000 a semester. I really don't do anything at all so it like getting money to play DoD. The only thing is in most places you have to be a Sophomore but I got in my second semester of my Freshman year.
