Okay so I am happy to be typing this to you right now. I got a call from a friend of mine today while at work asking if she could come by and download some music. I said sure and didn't think anything else of it because she has a key and does it all the time.

So I get a call a few hours later:

"Hey there's something wrong with your computer."

I replied, "There is nothing wrong with my computer, It defrags itself every night and does a virus scan every morning at 8am."

"No seriously, there is something wrong. I was downloading music, and all of a sudden this little window popped up saying your computer was being attacked by a bunch of numbers (IP Addresses) and I clicked on it. Now the whole screen has a bunch of windows open that I can't close."

Panic.

"Okay, can you open my virus scanner and run a full scan and stop downloading whatever you have running?"

"Where is the virus scanner?"

"On the desktop, Kapersky.

"Okay clicked it, nothing happened."

"Alright just leave it alone and I'll look at it when I get home."

So I left work a few hours ago, get home and sure enough my screen is full of pop-ups. I can't close them, can't ctrl+alt+del, can't access my control panel, my virus scanner is GONE, not disabled, it has actually been deleted. I can't launch system restore, can't launch the internet, can't even run the command prompt.

I can't do anything....

So reluctantly I pull out my Vista Install CD, pop it in and restart my pc knowing I am losing all my music, movies, games, and more importantly, my map and all my custom files for mapping.

On restart, I get a message...

Fresh Install

Restore

Oh?

I chose restore and thankfully my PC sets a restore point everyday after it runs a virus scan. I choose the one from this morning, cross my fingers, and wait.

IT WORKED!!!

Moral of the story. Schedule your virus scanner, and restore points on a regular basis. This was the nastiest virus I have ever seen. It deleted my virus scanner, created a drive labelled X on my comptuer, and disabled my internet, task manager, and just about everything else.

Be careful with what files you are downloading and who you let use your pc.

Yea I've dealt with some nasty viruses before too. My roomate got one that sent out spam e-mails from his comp by the thousands and my internet got turned off until I could fix it. I was so pissed at him (he had punched wholes in our apartment walls and destroyed a leather gaming chair of mine) I just went into his comp and deleted any driver, tool, software, or registry that had ANYTHING to do with the internet. Virus *SOLVED* and internet restored...roomate then moved out so it was like two birds with one stone!

But yea....ever hear of the iluvyou virus? My friend had a flash drive that had it ready to go. It changes every file on your comp to a .iluvyou extension. It's fixable but...yea.

That always makes for a fun evening. Reminds me of the other day when I updated my video driver with the wrong files and I blue-screened at the startup splash screen every time. Finally it stopped itself before the splash screen and asked if I wanted to to run a system troubleshoot. Luckily my computer made a restore point the night before that I could use. Thank god for restore points and smart programs that make them for you, am I right?

Amen. I got a virus not too long ago that changed your internet to a proxy server so you couldnt get out to try to update any virus scans. it would then try to tell you your system was infected with a virus and to scan with a program that was in itself the virus. after alot of fussing i finally booted from a disk and was able to go and delete every file that the virus downloaded into my system. i also used Maleware to remove any sleeper setting that the virus but in. in the end a shit ton of pain in the ass worrying
