This is stemming from engles comment in the black ops thread on how games nowadays are starting to be not worth the money. This indeed has been bugging me lately and ive noticed that many really hyped up games that look so freakin good turn out to be really erally short and half assed. Wtf is goin on? For example Fable 3, really good franchised, hyped out the wazoo and wam...SHORT.....medal of honor...SHORT.....star wars the force unleashed 2....SHORT....the Halo reach campaign was a tad short and its saddening that Halo 2 and 3's multiplayer beat it by a long shot. THe last great long game i played recently was Bayonetta. Is anyone else noticing this? On how games are not even worth the money because their too short. Me personally i only buy a game if it has really good multiplayer. I tend to rent singleplayer games but depending on how it does i may buy it but still. im seeing a trend of short singleplayer being the ultimate killer of games nowadays. Is this because companies will make more money by creating DLC and "eventually" making the game longer?...thats just stupid....thoughts people? i know engle is gonna vent some hehe : P.

well i can agree on that especially halo reach i bought it for 360 and now i already want to trade it in or sell it to get my money back and i got it when the game came out

For me, I want a well rounded game. I prefer a long campaign so I don't always have to listen to some whiny kid playing a video game. I also prefer a well planned multiplayer, usually one that doesn't have someone running around acting like an idiot and is generally well balanced.

It is because it is a market that they KNOW people will buy into, regardless of quality (in a lot of cases). As long as a "call of duty" or "halo" label is slapped on a game, they know frat boys and fan boys across the world will buy it for 50 to 60 dollars. It is becoming a fad in alot of cases, Halo, Medal of honor, Call of duty, and other games are "in" right now, even though there are FAR better first person shooters out there, for instance, DoD. It seems as though the video game market is becoming much like our film market. Produce a movie with alot of cool CGI, famous actors, a terrible plot, and a lot of bad writing, and you will have a hit movie that will make a shitload of money at the box office. The same is happening with video games. The average video game player is more concerned about graphics these days than game play, which is why games like the titles listed above are more popular, and are gaining millions in revenue, while awesome games like DoD, that focuses more on game play, arent as popular.

One of the worst things nowaday is all the added DLC. I'm not saying DLC is not awesome and wanted but in some games that info is actually on the disc and you buying it only unlocks it. One thing I did like about Mass Effect 2 was that they did give you some free DLC that came out after. Down side was they had some what I believe was essential to the game DLC that came out after.

I totally agree. I refuse to buy video games any more until I've found some one else who was dumb enough to get wrapped up in the hype and unless there still playing it I won't even look at it. I know a lot of people really enjoy star craft 2 but I have to admit I was kind of disappointed. Ya multi player kicks ass on it but the campaign was way to short I thought.

some games are put out there for the hype... CoD for example... i usually don't rage with console games ill get pissed when i miss a shot but when i shoot someone and they live to turn and shot me time and again... i'm gonna flip a shit. the one game i am waiting for that looks like they are going to quality is Gears of War 3 which has been pushed into next year so they can refine more of it. this type of quick in quick out is what makes me reluctant to get any games unless recommended by a friend or i got a chance to play it myself before purchasing...

I feel you. I recently got assasin's creed brotherhood, and the multiplyer is all about quality and gameplay. Of course it discourages twitching and encourages thought and planning so it makes some less desirables go away. I won a game with.... wait for it... wait for it... 2 kills. 2nd place had 11 kills. I won because i planned and executed my assassinations flawlessly. Love the multiplayer. Check it out if your like. And if you get it for Xbox my gamertag is Random CAB00SE.

just had to say that for any leafs fans who suck

Total war games are alright. Napoleon was kind of a let down but hopefully ill get a new machine to run shogun 2. There are some games that have come out that are just awsome ;like of course Brotherhood and Need for speed hot pursuit. If yall want to be savy concious gamers then ide recommend IGN reviews. I always check reviews before i buy games. And i agree with the whole hyped up label. Halo has succumb to that as well but the thing that redeems it is its popular multiplayer. I will never touch blackops becasue for 1 i do not trust Treyarch ever since tehy ruined COD 3 and Modernwarfail 2's multiplayer was atrocious, laggy, hacker ridden, and most of all...no destructible enviornments or ragdoll physics. THat being said i love the multiplayer for bad company 2. I dont buy a game unless it has a long lasting multiplayer experience and bad company 2 + the xpac vietnam thats coming out for it in my opinion will wipe the floor with black cops. Just like brotherhoods MP is already gaining massive glory for its uniquness.

Good videogames are old hat like system shock 2 fucking half life, day of defeat of course and deus ex but then again back then games were getting good but now they know that people will take anything for god knows why it's dissapointing and kind of makes me wish i was born earlier so i wouldn't have missed so many lovely games and now since i was born in this day and age what passes off as bad for most people i can't bring myself to hate which angers me so ;-; but hey you can always coun't on valve :D

Alot of it yes has some bit to do with the economy and the fact that the industry is being treated more and more like a business than a venue for entertainment.

The "recession" has gotten everyone scared out of their minds, "Will I have a job tomorrow?" "Will I have food for my family?" And things like this, so game developers are looking at what is selling like hotcakes and building something like it, so we're going to be seeing alot more games like COD, until financial settings are a little more secure and developers and publishers are more willing to take a chance.

Call of Duty hit the wall with 4, it was a great game, but World at War and Modern Warfare 2 were sadly the signs of things to come, Black Ops, is ok, but overall the quality took a severe drop.

When Half Life and System Shock, they came out when the gaming industry had it's high notes, it was on a good roll and the train tracks were stretching over the horizon and they were on the smoothest part, the train was at full speed, it was pushing out incredible games, and still was, original new ideas, great games, with amazing gameplay, sure there were the Halo's here and there but those were ok. But as we all know things aren't looking so good, the track is a bit old and worn and some of the planks are missing and the horizon is a bit hard to see through the tunnel. So, their spending all their resources to keep that light burning to see the tunnel and watch the track, they won't be taking many risks on speed or quality for now.

well half life was actually kind of the same way with black ops except valve was small and had to take a chance so they put together half life and got lucky

I agree as well. The only good (most recent) game that I have played in the past year was the Half Life 2 series. Great story line with awsome characters. I just wish they would come out w/ an EP3. I think that the best games that were developed were back between 1995-1999.

For Example:

Outcast (not Jedi Outcast)

The 1st Thief

The 1st Unreal Tournament

Half Life

Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2

Mysteries of the Sith

And those are just some of the great few...
